The New York Mets have been struggling recently, but one bright spot in their tumultuous season is the emergence of starting pitcher Nolan McLean. The Mets are currently facing steep challenges in their playoff pursuit. After sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies from August 25-27, the team has faltered, posting a disheartening 5-12 record. This slump includes a heartbreaking four-game sweep by the Phillies, part of an eight-game losing streak that has all but extinguished their chances in the National League East. As of September 15, the Mets find themselves trailing by 12 games in the division and merely 1.5 games ahead of the San Francisco Giants for the final Wild Card position.

McLean stepped onto the field for his sixth career start against the Texas Rangers on Sunday, and he continued to showcase his remarkable talent. The young right-hander delivered six shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out seven and issuing only two walks. Although he did not receive the win—thanks to a thrilling walk-off three-run homer from Pete Alonso that sealed a 5-2 victory in 10 innings—his performance was crucial in breaking the team’s eight-game losing streak.

In the process, McLean etched his name into Mets history. According to reports, he posted an extraordinary 1.19 ERA through his first six starts, setting a new franchise record. This accomplishment surpassed the previous mark held by Terry Leach, who finished his first six outings with a 1.73 ERA.
