Yankees Consider Reuniting with Isiah Kiner-Falefa Amid Offseason Changes

The New York Yankees are gearing up for a transformative offseason, expected to include some bold moves. However, amidst the high-profile acquisitions, a focus on solidifying the roster’s depth and character could lead them back to Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a free agent utility player who recently played a pivotal role for the Toronto Blue Jays in their postseason run.

Kiner-Falefa’s Previous Tenure in New York

During his two-year stint with the Yankees, Kiner-Falefa was met with mixed reviews from fans. Despite not being a standout favorite, his contributions were undeniable. In 2022, he posted a batting line of .261/.314/.327, hitting four home runs and driving in 48 runs while swiping 22 bases across 531 plate appearances. Defensively, he showcased his skills by amassing 10 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) at shortstop, culminating in a 1.5 fWAR.

Kiner-Falefa’s 2023 season saw him finish with a lower OPS of .646, but he still managed to hit six home runs and contribute 37 RBIs, alongside 14 stolen bases. On the defensive side, he recorded -4 DRS as an outfielder and 3 DRS at third base over 240 1/3 innings.

The former Gold Glove winner at third base, acquired in a trade with the Texas Rangers, was eventually dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates before being waived and claimed back by Toronto. There, he competed in 19 regular-season games and made 15 appearances during the playoffs, proving his resilience and value in critical situations.

Current Infield Landscape for the Yankees

As the Yankees prepare for the 2026 season, their infield depth, particularly on the left side, raises some concerns. With Ryan McMahon and José Caballero potentially stepping into starting roles at third base and shortstop, respectively, the team will need to navigate the absence of Anthony Volpe, who is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

The bench options are also limited, with Oswaldo Cabrera returning from a fractured ankle and Jorbit Vivas and Braden Shewmake providing additional depth. This scenario sets the stage for Kiner-Falefa’s return, as he would not only elevate the overall floor of the team but also serve as a reliable spark off the bench.

Kiner-Falefa’s Defensive Value

While it’s clear that Kiner-Falefa may not be an offensive powerhouse, the Yankees are acutely aware of his defensive prowess. His above-average skills at both shortstop and third base make him a valuable asset, particularly in a season where the team looks to shore up its infield defense. His DRS totals of 3 at third base and 1 at shortstop demonstrate his capability to make significant contributions in the field.

As the Yankees embark on this offseason, the potential reunion with Isiah Kiner-Falefa could serve as a strategic move to enhance their roster’s depth. With the right blend of talent and experience, Kiner-Falefa could help stabilize the Yankees as they aim to reclaim their status among baseball’s elite.
