Nationals’ shortstop crisis: Is it time to ditch CJ Abrams for good?

Nationals’ Shortstop Dilemma: Is It Time to Move On from CJ Abrams?

As the Washington Nationals look to reshape their roster under new leadership, the question of CJ Abrams’ future as the starting shortstop looms large. With Paul Toboni now at the helm as president of baseball operations, the organization is poised for a fresh evaluation of its talent, particularly regarding the team’s defensive capabilities.

Defensive Struggles Under Scrutiny

The Nationals have faced substantial defensive challenges this season, finishing with a minus-33 in outs above average and a staggering minus-50 in fielding run value, ranking them near the bottom of the league in both categories. While Luis Garcia Jr.’s defensive woes have garnered much attention, the spotlight also shines on Abrams, whose performance at shortstop has not lived up to expectations.

Despite showing some improvement from a disappointing 2024 campaign, Abrams continues to be a defensive liability. At 25 years old and with over 4,300 innings logged at shortstop, one would expect a more polished performance. Instead, his career metrics tell a different story: a minus-45 in outs above average, a fielding run value of minus-37, and six defensive runs saved, compounded by 74 errors. These figures raise significant doubts about his ability to be a reliable defender at such a critical position.

Calls for a Position Change

Jack McGuire from District on Deck argues that the time has come for the Nationals to reconsider Abrams’ role on the team. “Abrams should not be the Nationals’ shortstop of the future. He is a well-below-average defender, and the Nationals are doing their pitchers a disservice by having him start at the position every day,” he stated. This perspective underscores the urgency to shift Abrams to a less demanding position, which could enhance the team’s overall defensive capabilities and allow for better player development across the roster.

Exploring Internal Alternatives

With uncertainty surrounding the Nationals’ strategy for acquiring external talent, the focus naturally turns to potential internal replacements for Abrams at shortstop. Unfortunately, the options are limited. Nasim Nunez emerges as the leading candidate, known for his solid defensive skills. However, concerns linger about his batting consistency, which may hinder his immediate effectiveness.

In the long term, the Nationals boast a number of promising prospects such as Seaver King and Eli Willits, but these players are still years away from making an impact in the majors. This reality complicates the decision-making process regarding Abrams’ future at shortstop. Unless Nunez can demonstrate significant offensive improvement in the upcoming spring, the Nationals may find themselves sticking with Abrams for another season at shortstop.

In this transitional phase for the franchise, the Nationals face critical decisions that could redefine their infield dynamics. As they weigh the pros and cons of sticking with Abrams or exploring other options, the clock is ticking on finding a resolution that aligns with their long-term vision.
