Milwaukee Brewers stun MLB with $22M offer to retain ace Brandon Woodruff despite injury concerns

Brewers Make Bold Move to Retain Woodruff

The Milwaukee Brewers are making a strong statement about their intentions for the 2026 season with their recent moves concerning ace pitcher Brandon Woodruff. When the team announced that Woodruff’s mutual option had been declined, they clarified that the rejection came from the pitcher himself, not the organization. This decision set the stage for a surprising turn of events.

A Surprising Offer Amid Injury Concerns

In a bold move, the Brewers extended a qualifying offer to Woodruff, valued at just over $22 million. This decision is particularly noteworthy given that the team is already on the hook for a $10 million buyout tied to the mutual option. The financial commitment has raised eyebrows, especially in the context of a franchise known for its cautious spending habits.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic labeled this qualifying offer as “stunning,” emphasizing the Brewers’ typical reluctance to pay substantial salaries. The only player who has previously enjoyed a higher annual salary in Milwaukee is outfielder Christian Yelich, who is set to earn $26 million per season through 2028.

Understanding the Risks and Rewards

Brandon Woodruff, who will turn 33 in February, has faced his share of challenges in recent years. He has made only 12 starts over the past two seasons, largely due to shoulder surgery. Moreover, he missed the postseason last year because of a right lat strain, which was not connected to his prior injury. These concerns complicate the Brewers’ investment, yet they signal a clear desire to keep Woodruff within their ranks.

The competitive landscape for starting pitchers could play a significant role in Woodruff’s decision-making. Despite the injury history, there’s a robust market for capable starters, and he may very well choose to explore his options rather than accept the Brewers’ offer.

Commitment to the Future

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold has made it clear that the organization is committed to bringing Woodruff back. “We are focused on retaining Brandon,” Arnold stated, demonstrating the team’s determination to solidify its pitching rotation. As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on Woodruff and how he navigates this pivotal moment in his career. The Brewers’ willingness to make such a substantial offer reflects their strategic priorities and hope for a healthier future for their ace.
