Miles Mikolas’ Future in Jeopardy as Cardinals Move Forward

The St. Louis Cardinals are likely to part ways with Miles Mikolas, a once-polarizing All-Star who has been a mainstay in their rotation for the past eight years. Mikolas made his mark after returning to Major League Baseball from Japan, where he initially revived his career. His tenure has been marked by highs and lows, with moments of brilliance overshadowed by more recent struggles.

Career Highlights and Decline

During his standout season in 2018, Mikolas earned an All-Star nod by posting an impressive 2.83 ERA over 32 starts. The following year, he maintained a respectable 4.16 ERA in another 32 starts. However, a setback in 2020 kept him off the field entirely, and his subsequent seasons have been a mixed bag. In 2021, he returned with a 4.23 ERA in just nine starts, but he rebounded in 2022, again earning All-Star honors with a solid 3.29 ERA across 33 starts.

Unfortunately, his performance has declined since then. Over the last three seasons, Mikolas has struggled to maintain effectiveness, posting an ERA of 4.78 or higher in 31 or more starts each year. This downward trend raises questions about his future in the league.

A Quiet Free Agency Market

Currently a free agent, Mikolas finds himself in a precarious position as the offseason progresses quietly. The lack of buzz surrounding his market has left many wondering if he will receive another opportunity in Major League Baseball. With his age now at 37, he is primarily viewed as an innings eater, a reliable presence on the mound but one whose effectiveness has waned.

While there may be teams willing to take a chance on him, possibly offering a minor league deal based on his ability to consume innings, the uncertainty looms large. Alternatively, Mikolas has hinted at a desire to return to the international stage, reminiscent of his earlier career in Japan.

In a recent conversation, he expressed to “Sports Hochi” his aspiration to pitch abroad once again. The question remains: where will Miles Mikolas land next? As the offseason unfolds, his next move will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
