Michael Soroka emerges as Cubs’ secret weapon despite rocky start in MLB playoff push

Date:

Cubs Bolster Playoff Hopes with Michael Soroka Acquisition

The Chicago Cubs are actively working to enhance their roster as they gear up for a pivotal playoff push. Among their strategic moves leading up to the MLB trade deadline, one acquisition stands out as a potential game-changer: Michael Soroka.

Trade Deadline Moves and Roster Reinforcements

The Cubs made several key additions in a bid to strengthen their team for the stretch run. In the bullpen, they brought in veteran Andrew Kittredge from the Baltimore Orioles, adding depth and experience to support closer Daniel Palencia, who is currently nursing an injury. The offense also received a boost with the acquisition of Willi Castro from the Minnesota Twins, enhancing the team’s bench and positional versatility.

However, it was Soroka—acquired from the Washington Nationals—who captured the most attention. The Cubs entered the trade deadline with a starting rotation in dire need of bolstering, especially following the loss of ace Justin Steele for the remainder of the season. Expectations ran high that the Cubs would pursue a high-caliber starter, but Soroka’s addition appeared more as a safety net for Jameson Taillon, who had just returned from injury but was quickly sidelined once more.

Soroka’s Rocky Start

Soroka’s first outing with the Cubs quickly turned sour. Despite some initial hope, he suffered an injury in his debut on August 4 and has yet to return to the mound. Given his injury history and underwhelming performance with the Nationals, many viewed this acquisition with skepticism. However, Cubs insiders are not ready to write him off just yet.

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic has identified Soroka as the team’s key x-factor as they head into the final weeks of the season. The optimism surrounding his potential contribution lies in his versatility. Soroka has experience as both a starter and a reliever, making him a candidate for a swingman role that could benefit the Cubs’ pitching staff greatly.

Positive Signs During Rehab

Recent updates from Soroka’s rehabilitation process have provided a glimmer of hope. His velocity is reportedly on the rise, a promising sign considering he had struggled with it prior to his acquisition. With Javier Assad returning to health, the immediate need for Soroka in the rotation has diminished. However, the Cubs could still find value in deploying him as a reliever, where he thrived during his time with the Chicago White Sox last season.

Utilizing Soroka as a bullpen asset might not only allow him to make a significant impact down the stretch but could also help mitigate the risk of further injury as the team aims for a playoff berth. With the pressure mounting, the Cubs will be looking for any edge they can find, and Soroka could very well emerge as a crucial component of their pitching strategy in the coming weeks.
