Miami Marlins set ambitious offseason goals for success in 2026

The Miami Marlins find themselves at a critical juncture as they prepare for the 2026 season. After a tumultuous 2022 that saw them lose 100 games, the team made strides in 2023, remaining competitive in the National League wild card race until late September under the guidance of first-year manager Clayton McCullough. While the postseason eluded them for the second time in three years, the foundation for a promising future is undeniably in place. With a vibrant young core, the Marlins are poised to make impactful decisions this offseason, which kicks off shortly after the conclusion of the World Series. Here are three strategic goals the Marlins should prioritize as they seek to build on their progress.

Add a Veteran at First Base

One key area the Marlins should address is first base. While they may not be in the running for high-profile players like Pete Alonso, adding a seasoned veteran could inject needed power and experience into their lineup. Paul Goldschmidt, fresh off a season with the New York Yankees, has expressed a desire to continue playing. His versatility and solid defensive skills would complement Miami’s roster, and he may come at a more affordable price point.

If the Marlins are willing to explore bigger options, Josh Naylor could be an intriguing target after his postseason performance with the Seattle Mariners. Carlos Santana also presents a viable choice, bringing both experience and stability to the position. Prioritizing a veteran presence at first base should be high on the Marlins’ to-do list as they gear up for the 2026 season.

Hold Onto Young Pitching

The Marlins’ pitching staff is another area ripe for consideration, especially given the anticipated demand for quality arms through trades. Both Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera are likely to attract interest from various front offices this winter. However, the Marlins should resist the urge to part with these valuable assets unless an exceptional offer comes along.

Alcantara and Cabrera have demonstrated their potential to anchor the rotation, particularly in a season where the team came tantalizingly close to playoff contention despite navigating injuries and rotation uncertainties. With many of their pitching questions answered, the Marlins should aim to retain these young talents, entering the new season with a strong and cohesive pitching unit. Should circumstances shift as the trade deadline approaches, they can reassess their strategy, but for now, keeping their best pitchers is essential.

Extend Kyle Stowers

One of the more notable developments in the Marlins’ recent seasons has been the emergence of outfielder Kyle Stowers. His progression has been impressive, and securing his future with the franchise should be another primary objective this offseason. Stowers has shown flashes of his potential, and extending his contract could solidify his role as a key contributor moving forward.

The Marlins have an opportunity to build on their recent successes by making strategic moves this offseason. By augmenting their lineup with a veteran first baseman, retaining their burgeoning pitching talent, and extending promising players like Stowers, they can continue to foster a culture of growth and competitiveness in South Florida. As they look ahead to 2026, the Marlins are not just aiming to be participants in the postseason race; they are setting their sights on becoming serious contenders.
