Miami Marlins’ first base drama erupts: shock contender with zero experience emerges as top choice!

Marlins Face Crucial First Base Decision Ahead of 2026 Season

As the Miami Marlins prepare for the upcoming 2026 season, they find themselves navigating a complex roster situation. With a wealth of starting pitching but a glaring deficiency in reliable relief options, the team’s most pressing concern lies at first base. The departure of Troy Johnston, who was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies this winter, has left a significant void that needs to be filled.

The pivotal question on everyone’s minds is: who will step up to claim the first base position in Johnston’s absence? The Marlins have a promising pool of infield prospects and young talents in the Major Leagues, but determining the right player for the role is critical. It’s not just about filling the position; it’s about finding a player who can seamlessly transition into the lineup and contribute effectively at the plate.

Potential Candidates for First Base

Recent reports have shed light on the players vying for the first base spot. Kevin Barral and Isaac Azout of Fish on First have highlighted Eric Wagaman, who held the position for most of last season, as a strong contender. However, he is not alone in the running. Three other names have emerged as potential candidates: Connor Norby, Graham Pauley, and Liam Hicks.

While Wagaman, Pauley, and Hicks are familiar figures at first base, having logged time at the position in their MLB careers, Norby presents an intriguing twist to the competition. Notably, Norby has yet to don a first baseman’s glove at the Major League level, nor has he played the position at any point in his professional career.

Norby joined the Marlins following a tenure in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system, where he made his MLB debut. His lack of experience at first base adds an element of uncertainty, but it also speaks to his versatility and the Marlins’ willingness to explore unconventional solutions.

As the team evaluates its options, the first base drama unfolds, highlighting the Marlins’ balancing act between experience and potential. With the 2026 season on the horizon, the choices made in the coming weeks will be crucial in shaping the team’s competitive landscape.
