Mets eye blockbuster trade for Royals’ Kris Bubic to boost rotation after breakout season!

Mets Explore Trade for Royals’ Kris Bubic to Fortify Rotation

The New York Mets find themselves at a crucial juncture this offseason, as they look to enhance a starting rotation that has shown promise but requires additional depth. Rather than pursuing long-term free-agent options, the team is exploring trade possibilities, particularly eyeing the Kansas City Royals’ Kris Bubic as a compelling candidate.

Mets’ Trade Discussions Heat Up

Reports indicate that the Mets are actively engaging with multiple teams regarding potential trades, not only for pitching but also for a bat. Among the teams in the mix is the San Diego Padres, with discussions centered on pitchers like Mason Miller, Nick Pivetta, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, and outfielder Ramon Laureano. However, one name that stands out is Bubic, who has emerged as a prime target for New York.

Kris Bubic’s Breakout Season

Bubic is entering the final year of club control, making him an appealing option for a Mets team looking to balance short-term gains with future considerations. The left-hander is set to earn a modest $4.5 million in 2026 while coming off a breakout season that saw him finish with an 8-7 record, a 2.55 ERA, and a solid 1.18 WHIP over 20 starts and 116 innings. His performance included 116 strikeouts and a 3.1 bWAR, highlighting his effectiveness on the mound.

However, Bubic’s season was cut short in July due to a rotator cuff injury, raising questions about his long-term durability. Still, the Royals are reportedly open to trading him, making this an opportune moment for the Mets to strike a deal.

Potential Trade Dynamics

In exchange for Bubic, Kansas City is seeking outfield assistance, and the Mets could potentially offer Nick Morabito, a speedy outfield prospect who is close to being MLB-ready. Acquiring Bubic would bolster a Mets rotation that includes notable names like Nolan McLean, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat. However, the Mets might need to part with one of their established arms, like Senga or Peterson, to accommodate Bubic’s addition.

Bubic’s Skill Set and Fit

While Bubic may not overpower hitters with velocity—averaging 92.1 mph on his four-seamer—his advanced metrics tell a different story. According to Baseball Savant, he boasts a 46.5% ground ball rate, placing him in the 71st percentile, alongside a chase rate of 32.4%, which ranks in the 89th percentile. This ground ball tendency aligns well with the Mets’ strong middle infield defense, anchored by Francisco Lindor and Marcus Semien.

Bubic employs a diverse pitching repertoire, featuring a four-seamer, changeup, sweeper, slider, and sinker. Prior to his breakout as a starter, he recorded a commendable 2.67 ERA in 27 relief appearances during the 2024 season, further showcasing his potential to contribute to a contending team.

In summary, as the offseason unfolds, the Mets are keenly aware of their need for rotation upgrades. A trade for Kris Bubic could be a strategic move, allowing them to solidify their starting staff while providing Kansas City with the outfield support they seek.
