Mets Reinforce Bullpen with La Sorsa as NL East Race Intensifies

The New York Mets are navigating through a challenging week as they press on in their pursuit of a division title that has eluded them since 2015. Amidst this quest, they faced a notable setback when Kodai Senga, once a frontrunner for the Cy Young Award, was demoted to Triple-A. In response to their pitching rotation’s struggles, the Mets have made several roster adjustments, including the promotion of their No. 5 prospect, pitcher Brandon Sproat, and the addition of veteran reliever Wander Suero.

Mets Add Left-Handed Reliever Joe La Sorsa

As they prepare for a crucial series against the Cincinnati Reds, the Mets have fortified their bullpen with the signing of left-handed pitcher Joe La Sorsa. The 27-year-old opted for free agency after being designated for assignment by the Reds on September 2.

La Sorsa has had a rocky season in the major leagues, appearing in five games where he posted a 10.80 ERA and a 2.25 WHIP, striking out two batters over 6.2 innings. However, his performance in Triple-A Louisville paints a more promising picture. With the Bats, he recorded a commendable 2.82 ERA and 1.34 WHIP, accumulating 41 strikeouts in 44.2 innings across 45 games.

The Mets plan to have La Sorsa report to Triple-A Syracuse initially, where he could earn a call-up to the big leagues, potentially providing a much-needed boost to the Mets’ bullpen.

Aiming for the NL East Title

As the Mets continue their push for the NL East title, they find themselves six games behind the Philadelphia Phillies. With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Mets may need to recalibrate their expectations, as they currently occupy a Wild Card spot, holding a four-game advantage over the teams pursuing them.

With each game carrying significant weight, the Mets are making strategic moves to enhance their roster, hoping that these adjustments will help them close the gap in the standings and reignite their championship aspirations.
