Merrill Kelly poised for a pitching payday as Texas Rangers ace eyes lucrative multi-year deal in free agency

Merrill Kelly Positioned for a Lucrative Free Agency After Strong Season with the Rangers

The Texas Rangers have made a significant move this season, bolstering their pitching rotation just as the MLB trade deadline approached. Rather than pursuing offensive players, the Rangers focused on their strength on the mound, acquiring veteran starter Merrill Kelly, among others. This decision could set the stage for a substantial payday for Kelly as he heads into free agency.

Strategic Acquisitions Enhance Rangers’ Pitching Depth

When the Rangers opted to enhance their pitching rather than their offense, they caught many by surprise. The team secured relief pitchers Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals and Danny Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins, but the highlight of their acquisitions was undoubtedly Merrill Kelly. The Rangers outbid the New York Mets in the sweepstakes for the right-hander, offering three top pitching prospects to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Before joining the Rangers, Kelly was enjoying an impressive season with the Diamondbacks. He made 22 starts, logging 128.2 innings with a commendable 3.22 ERA and 121 strikeouts. Since donning the Rangers jersey, Kelly has continued to shine, making six starts with a 3.11 ERA over 35.1 innings and racking up 28 strikeouts. Despite his strong performances, the Rangers have managed only a 3-3 record in games he started, though he has delivered four consecutive quality starts, consistently giving Texas a chance to win.

A Bright Future Ahead for Kelly

Kelly’s continued excellence at 36 years old has positioned him well for the upcoming offseason. He is set to become a free agent, concluding a three-year, $24 million contract signed prior to the 2023 season. As he prepares to enter the market, industry experts are optimistic about his prospects. Notably, MLB insider Jeff Passan has projected that Kelly could secure a multi-year deal this winter.

Despite the fact that he will turn 37 by Opening Day 2026, several factors are in Kelly’s favor. His consistent high-level performance and the absence of a qualifying offer—thanks to his midseason trade—enhance his appeal. According to Passan, “It’s not powerful, but Kelly’s game is pretty. The pitch mix, the command—it all has allowed him the opportunity, at 37 in October, to cash in on a multiyear deal this winter.”

Impressive Career Numbers Bolster Kelly’s Marketability

Throughout his career, Kelly has maintained a solid 3.72 ERA across 988.1 innings, striking out 893 batters. His recent years have seen him elevate his game further, with the exception of an injury-plagued 2024 season, where he posted a 4.03 ERA. Notably, since 2022, Kelly has consistently produced at least 3.5 bWAR in each season, underscoring his reliability as an innings eater and a valuable asset for any pitching rotation.

As the offseason approaches, teams will likely line up for Kelly’s services, eager to tap into his experience and proven track record. With his impressive performance and marketability, Merrill Kelly is poised to make a significant impact in free agency, potentially securing a deal that reflects his contributions on the mound.
