Mariners eye power surge with Alonso as backup plan if Naylor walks away from Seattle lineup

Mariners Eye Power Surge with Alonso as Contingency Plan

The Seattle Mariners are preparing for a pivotal offseason as they look to build on their success from the previous year. Central to their playoff run was first baseman Josh Naylor, whose contributions were invaluable. However, with Naylor’s contract set to expire after this season, the Mariners face a pressing dilemma: how to keep their core intact while planning for the possibility of his departure.

Backup Plan in Place

As speculation grows regarding Naylor’s future, analysts are already suggesting alternatives. One intriguing option is New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso, a player whose power could significantly enhance Seattle’s lineup. According to insights from fansided’s Zachary Rotman, the Mariners would be wise to consider Alonso if they fail to secure Naylor’s return.

“Naylor is a better defender and contact hitter, but Alonso is a tier or two above Naylor in the power department and as a run producer,” Rotman noted. “Can you imagine pairing his power bat with guys like Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez, and Randy Arozarena? Seattle ranked third in the majors in home runs this season and could be even more formidable in the power department with Alonso.”

Comparative Power Analysis

When comparing the two players, the statistics tell a compelling story. Alonso wrapped up his season with an impressive slash line of .272/.347/.524, highlighting his prowess as a power hitter. He belted 38 home runs and drove in 126 runs, placing him among the elite producers in the league. In contrast, Naylor posted a solid .295/.353/.462 line, with 20 home runs and 92 RBIs. While Naylor boasts superior contact skills and defensive capabilities, Alonso’s raw power is difficult to overlook.

Cost Considerations

Economically, Naylor would likely come at a lower price point than Alonso, which could influence Seattle’s decision-making. While Naylor excels in specific areas, such as defense and contact hitting, his advantages are minimal in comparison to Alonso’s overall offensive impact.

The Mariners certainly have a vested interest in retaining Naylor. His established rapport with the team and understanding of their system are invaluable assets. However, should he choose to pursue opportunities elsewhere, it would be prudent for Seattle to swiftly act on acquiring Alonso. His addition could transform their lineup into a formidable force in the league, adding an extra layer of power that could make a significant difference in their quest for postseason success.

Future Outlook

As the offseason approaches, the Mariners have critical decisions to make. Retaining Naylor should be a priority, but the potential acquisition of Alonso could reshape their offensive landscape. With several key players already in place, the addition of a power hitter like Alonso could elevate Seattle’s status as a serious contender in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.
