Marcus Semien races against time to rejoin Rangers lineup and fuel playoff dreams with late-season comeback

Marcus Semien’s Race Against Time to Rejoin the Rangers

As the Texas Rangers gear up for a pivotal stretch run, one name looms large in their playoff aspirations: Marcus Semien. The veteran infielder is working diligently to recover from a foot injury sustained just weeks ago, and his hope is to re-enter the lineup before the regular season concludes on September 28.

Injury Details and Recovery Progress

Semien’s injury saga began on August 21 during a game against the Kansas City Royals when he fouled a pitch off his foot. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed a fracture of the third metatarsal and a lisfranc sprain, with an initial recovery timeline estimated at four to six weeks. With three weeks of that timeline now behind him, Semien is optimistic about his prospects for a return to the diamond.

In recent updates, Semien has shed the walking boot that confined him after the injury. Reports indicate that he has begun simulating movements in the batter’s box, a crucial step in assessing his lower body’s readiness. His immediate goal is to participate in hitting drills when the Rangers face the Houston Astros in a critical three-game series starting Monday—one that could significantly impact Texas’ playoff chances.

Upcoming Benchmarks and Playoff Hopes

Should all go according to plan, the next significant hurdle for Semien will be running on his recovering foot upon the Rangers’ return home to face the Miami Marlins on September 19. Semien acknowledges that a six-week recovery would be an ideal scenario, but he’s aware that such a timeline may not allow him to return before the regular season wraps up. Nevertheless, he remains hopeful that by meeting these upcoming benchmarks, he could position himself for a postseason appearance should the Rangers qualify.

At 34 years old, Semien occupies a unique space in modern baseball as an everyday player. Since joining the league, he has consistently put up impressive numbers, maintaining an ironman streak of playing in at least 159 games each season since 2021. Notably, he appeared in all 162 games during the Rangers’ World Series-winning campaign in 2023, in addition to matching that feat in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Season Performance and Impact on the Team

Despite his durability, Semien’s offensive performance this season has been a disappointment compared to his past contributions. Currently, he is slashing .230/.305/.364 with 15 home runs and 64 RBIs. If the season were to end today, it would mark his least productive year at the plate since joining the Rangers. His contract, a seven-year deal worth $175 million signed before the 2022 season, places a spotlight on his performance during this critical phase of the season.

In Semien’s absence, the Rangers have turned to a rotating cast of players at second base, including Ezequiel Duran, Cody Freeman, and Dylan Moore. Their collective efforts have kept the Rangers competitive, narrowing the gap in the American League West to just two games behind the Houston Astros as they head into a weekend matchup against the New York Mets.

As Semien races against time to reclaim his position, the Rangers and their fans hold their breath, hoping for a late-season miracle that could reignite their playoff ambitions.
