Marcell Ozuna’s stunning free agency move: Braves star predicted to join Mets in NL East shakeup

Marcell Ozuna’s Potential Move: A New Chapter in the NL East

As the offseason approaches, the landscape of Major League Baseball is poised for significant changes, particularly within the National League East. One of the most intriguing storylines involves Marcell Ozuna, the Atlanta Braves’ all-star designated hitter, who may be eyeing a new home in Flushing, Queens, as he enters free agency.

Braves’ Roster Shakeup on the Horizon

Recent predictions suggest that Ozuna’s tenure with the Braves could be coming to an end. With the team finishing below .500 this season, a roster overhaul seems imminent. According to insights from Bleacher Report, Ozuna is projected to sign with the New York Mets, marking a notable shift within the division.

Despite a less-than-stellar performance last year, Ozuna is still viewed as a valuable asset, particularly in a designated hitter role. The Mets are expected to see him as an upgrade over Starling Marte, who has struggled at times. The anticipated contract for Ozuna stands at one year for approximately $13 million.

Ozuna’s 2023 Performance and Its Implications

In 145 games this past season, Ozuna posted a batting average of .232 coupled with a .756 OPS, hitting 21 home runs and driving in 68 runs. While he displayed an improvement in his walk rate, his power numbers dipped, raising questions about his offensive production moving forward.

As the trade deadline approached earlier this year, speculation surrounded Ozuna’s future with the Braves. Although Atlanta maintained that they wouldn’t make trades solely for salary relief, reports indicated that Ozuna exercised his 10-5 rights, effectively vetoing any potential deals. This decision may have been influenced by a persistent hip injury that hampered his performance throughout the season. As he aims for a rebound in the upcoming year, the Braves appear ready to let him seek opportunities elsewhere.

Braves Explore Alternatives for the DH Position

With Ozuna’s potential departure, the Braves are contemplating their options for the designated hitter role in 2024. One possibility involves a dual approach with Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy sharing duties at catcher and DH, an arrangement that has shown promise when Murphy was healthy. However, there is also a strong likelihood that the Braves will pursue a full-time designated hitter.

In their search, the Braves have been linked to various names, including Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe via trade, as well as free agents Eugenio Suarez and Ryan O’Hearn. While Ozuna’s return can’t be entirely ruled out, it would likely require a significant pay cut on a short-term deal.

The Road Ahead: Free Agency on the Horizon

As the World Series unfolds, the anticipation for the upcoming free agency period grows. Teams will soon begin to solidify their rosters, and the fate of players like Marcell Ozuna will become clearer. For the Braves and their fans, the next few weeks will be crucial in determining the future direction of the team and the potential reshaping of the NL East landscape.
