Los Angeles Angels stun fans by dropping Albert Pujols pursuit for 2026 manager role

Angels Opt Against Pursuing Albert Pujols for 2026 Manager Role

The Los Angeles Angels have officially decided to move on from their pursuit of Albert Pujols as the potential manager for the 2026 season. This shift comes after months of speculation and discussions following the dismissal of former manager Ron Washington. The Angels had initially identified Pujols as their top candidate, but significant differences regarding coaching staff, resources, and compensation ultimately led to a breakdown in negotiations.

Diverging Paths for Pujols and the Angels

According to sources, the Angels and Pujols were unable to reach an agreement that satisfied both parties. Though Pujols has been a beloved figure within the organization, his current role as a special assistant to the general manager has not translated into a managerial position. As the offseason progresses, Pujols finds himself in high demand, with eight Major League Baseball teams still searching for a manager ahead of the 2026 season.

In the wake of the stalled discussions, the Angels have granted the San Diego Padres permission to interview Pujols, while the Baltimore Orioles have also expressed interest in the future Hall of Famer. Notably, Pujols lacks managerial experience in MLB, but he has found success in the Dominican Republic. He led Leones del Escogido to a league championship and a Caribbean Series title during the 2024-25 season and is set to manage the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic in 2026.

Angels’ Contingency Plans for a New Manager

Despite losing out on Pujols, the Angels appear to have anticipated this outcome. The organization is now ready to explore other managerial candidates. Reports indicate that the Angels aim to interview a variety of prospects rather than immediately pivoting back to Pujols. The team’s strategy is evolving; while Pujols remains a favored option, owner Arte Moreno is advocating for a more comprehensive search process.

Insider sources have noted that the Angels may consider internal candidates, including special assistants Kurt Suzuki and Torii Hunter. Suzuki has already interviewed for the managerial position with the San Francisco Giants, while Hunter has shown a willingness to take on a managerial role in the past. Additionally, the Angels could look outside the organization at managers who have been let go during the season, such as Brandon Hyde.

Future Directions for the Angels

As the Angels navigate this managerial search, they are faced with a pivotal moment in their franchise history. The decision to step away from Pujols highlights the complexities of transitioning from player to manager, especially for someone with such a storied career. The coming weeks will be crucial as the organization seeks a leader who can guide them back to contention in the competitive landscape of Major League Baseball.
