Issac Paredes’ triumphant return gives Astros breathing room as Yordan Alvarez hits injured list again

Issac Paredes’ Return Offers Astros Relief as Yordan Alvarez Heads to Injured List

The Houston Astros welcomed back a key player just as they faced another setback with their star slugger. Isaac Paredes, activated from the injured list, has given the team a much-needed boost as they place Yordan Alvarez on the 10-day IL due to a sprained left ankle.

Paredes’ Activation Timing is Fortuitous

Prior to Friday’s game, the Astros made the strategic decision to activate Paredes, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury that once threatened to end his season. Alvarez, who sustained his injury earlier in the week against the Texas Rangers, will be out of action until at least next Friday due to MLB’s IL regulations, meaning he will miss a crucial weekend series against the Seattle Mariners.

Paredes stepped into the designated hitter role, traditionally occupied by Alvarez, immediately upon his return. With Carlos Correa now firmly established as the everyday third baseman, Paredes may continue to occupy the DH spot until Alvarez is back. Once Alvarez returns, Houston will need to creatively adjust their lineup to accommodate both players, adding further depth to an already talented roster.

Paredes’ Impact on the Astros’ Offense

Acquired from the Chicago Cubs in a December trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker the other way, Paredes has proven to be a valuable asset for the Astros. Before his injury, he demonstrated impressive offensive prowess, boasting a slash line of .259/.359/.470 with 19 home runs and 50 RBIs across 94 games. His performance included 15 doubles and one triple, showcasing his ability to contribute in multiple ways.

The hamstring injury in July had initially raised concerns about his availability for the remainder of the season, prompting the Astros to seek out a reliable option in Correa. Since his return, Paredes has been eager to prove his worth again on the field, and his presence is a welcomed relief for a team facing challenges.

Alvarez’s Ongoing Injury Struggles

This latest stint on the injured list marks the second time this season Alvarez has had to step away from the game. He previously missed three months due to right hand inflammation, which was eventually diagnosed as a small fracture. His return on August 26 was highly anticipated, and he had been performing exceptionally well, hitting .273/.367/.430 in 48 games with six home runs and 27 RBIs.

Reports indicate that Alvarez has been out of his walking boot and appears to be moving around better, raising hopes for a quicker recovery. Manager Joe Espada expressed optimism about Alvarez’s potential return but refrained from providing a specific timeline. The return of Paredes allows the Astros to exercise patience as they navigate Alvarez’s recovery.

With Paredes back in the mix, the Astros can focus on maintaining their competitive edge while awaiting the return of one of their most prolific hitters. The depth in their lineup will be crucial as they engage in vital matchups in the coming days.
