Braves Positioned to Retain Ha-Seong Kim Amid Free Agency Buzz
The Atlanta Braves find themselves at a critical juncture as the offseason unfolds, with several key players heading into free agency. Among them, shortstop Ha-Seong Kim is emerging as a strong candidate to remain with the team, defying the typical frenzy associated with the open market.
Predictions Favor Kim’s Return
According to MLB Trade Rumors, three out of four analysts foresee Kim re-signing with the Braves. The anticipated contract would span two years for a total of $30 million, representing a slight pay reduction of $1 million per season. However, this deal could provide Kim with more guaranteed money overall and strategically position him to avoid potential turmoil during the next offseason, which could be marred by a lockout.
Kim opted out of his player option earlier this week. After a commendable tenure with Atlanta, he has boosted his value enough to test the waters of free agency. The 30-year-old Gold Glove winner concluded the season with a .253 batting average, a .684 OPS, three home runs, and 12 RBIs over 24 games with the Braves. Notably, those three home runs mark the only ones hit by a Braves shortstop throughout the season.
Market Considerations and Contract Projections
While the projections for Kim suggest a two-year deal, there are others who believe he could secure a more lucrative three-year contract worth between $48 million and $60 million, complete with an opt-out clause after two years. The current shortstop market is relatively weak, which could work in Kim’s favor. However, his prior injury history and age may limit the scope of long-term, high-value contracts that younger, healthier players might command.
Braves’ Offseason Strategy and Other Free Agency Moves
Regardless of Kim’s decision, the Braves have other pressing needs to address. Both Marcell Ozuna and Raisel Iglesias are unrestricted free agents. While the team is expected to pursue Iglesias’ return, the future of Ozuna remains uncertain. The Braves have already begun making roster adjustments to initiate their offseason moves. They have picked up club options for Chris Sale and Ozzie Albies, while options for Pierce Johnson and Tyler Kinley were declined, catching many off guard.
These players could potentially re-sign, but the Braves are likely waiting to assess the market before making further commitments. In addition, the team has outrighted several players to clear spots on the 40-man roster for injured players and possible additions. Notably, they recently acquired outfielder Michael Siani off waivers.
Among the players who have chosen free agency, Sandy Leon stands out as the only one to re-sign, while Jake Fraley has been claimed by the Rays. As the Braves navigate this offseason, all eyes will be on their decisions regarding Kim and the overall roster composition moving forward.
