Gerrit Cole’s shocking admission: Opening Day return not happening for Yankees ace!

Date:

Gerrit Cole’s Opening Day Chances Take a Hit for Yankees

The New York Yankees faced a glaring absence this postseason, one that could have shifted the tide in their favor: Gerrit Cole. While Max Fried and Carlos Rodon showcased their capabilities throughout the regular season, both faltered under the high-stakes pressure of the American League Division Series against the Toronto Blue Jays. With a 2.93 ERA in 12 postseason appearances since joining the Yankees, Cole’s presence could have been pivotal in pushing the series to a decisive fifth game.

Cole Discusses His Return

As the Yankees turn their attention to the upcoming 2026 season, fans are keenly anticipating Cole’s return to the mound. During the ALS United Greater New York’s annual Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala, Cole candidly addressed his readiness for Opening Day in a conversation with Madeline Kennedy. His response was clear: “They mentioned that Opening Day is probably out of the picture, and that seems to make the most sense at this point. But when, afterwards, I’m not exactly sure. Hopefully, as soon as possible.”

This admission puts a damper on the expectations surrounding his comeback, leaving fans to ponder the timeline for his return. Cole’s eventual re-entry into the rotation is highly anticipated, especially with hopes of a strong postseason run looming.

A Rotation Built for October

When Cole finally takes the mound again, the Yankees will look to him to anchor a formidable rotation alongside Fried and Rodon. On paper, this trio could represent the best starting three in the American League—if Fried and Rodon can replicate their impressive regular-season performances.

The postseason beckons, and the Yankees are banking on Cole’s experience and big-game prowess to lead them deep into October. Since his tumultuous outing at Fenway Park during the 2021 Wild Card Series, where his performance left a mark on his reputation, Cole has evolved into one of the most formidable postseason pitchers in the game.

Proven Big Game Performer

Gerrit Cole’s postseason record speaks volumes. In four World Series appearances—split between the Houston Astros and the Yankees—he holds an impressive 2.36 ERA. Although the Yankees fell short in both games he started against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, his performance was nothing short of remarkable, posting a remarkable .71 ERA over those two starts.

Cole’s Game One start in the 2024 World Series was a masterclass, as he delivered six innings of one-run ball. Conversely, Game Five was marred by a defensive collapse behind him, resulting in five unearned runs over 6.1 innings. This unfortunate turn of events highlighted the fragility of baseball, where even the best pitchers can be undone by lackluster support from their teammates.

As the Yankees navigate the offseason and prepare for the challenges ahead, the hope remains that when Cole is ready to return, he will once again be the ace the franchise can rely upon—especially when the stakes are highest.
