Frankie Montas’ shocking Mets exit after disastrous season ignites MLB career uncertainty

Frankie Montas Faces Uncertainty Following Mets Designation for Assignment

Former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frankie Montas has found himself in a precarious position, as the New York Mets designated him for assignment this week. The move marks a significant turning point in the career of the 32-year-old right-hander, who has experienced a tumultuous season.

Montas struggled during the 2024 season, finishing with a record of 4-8 and a 5.01 ERA across 19 starts for the Reds. His performance raised eyebrows, particularly after the Reds traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline. In that swap, Cincinnati acquired outfielder Joey Wiemer, who was later included in a deal with Jonathan India for pitcher Brady Singer during the offseason.

Last offseason, Montas inked a two-year, $34 million contract with the Mets, but his time in New York was brief and disappointing. He made only nine starts and posted an alarming ERA exceeding six, a far cry from the expectations that had accompanied his signing.

A Journey Through the League

Montas’s career has been anything but straightforward. Over his ten years in Major League Baseball, he has played for several teams, including the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Reds, Brewers, Mets, and Chicago White Sox. He made his MLB debut on September 2, 2015, making a notable entry by throwing a scoreless inning with a strikeout against the Minnesota Twins.

Given his recent struggles and the Mets’ decision to part ways, it seems unlikely that Cincinnati would consider bringing Montas back into the fold, despite his previous tenure with the team.

Looking Ahead

As Montas navigates this challenging chapter in his career, questions loom about his future in the league. The combination of a poor performance last season and a recent designation for assignment has inevitably put his MLB prospects in jeopardy. Teams will be watching closely to see if he can regain his form or if this marks the beginning of a more significant transition in his professional journey.

With the landscape of MLB constantly shifting, only time will reveal what lies ahead for Montas. Fans and analysts alike will be keeping a keen eye on his next steps as the offseason unfolds.
