Former Braves Manager Applauds Walt Weiss as Ideal Choice
Walt Weiss’s recent promotion to manager of the Atlanta Braves has garnered enthusiastic approval from a significant figure in the organization—former Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. In a candid discussion on MLB Network Radio, Gonzalez expressed his admiration for Weiss, framing the decision to elevate him as a clear and sensible choice.
Unexpected Timing and Immediate Reaction
Gonzalez’s praise for Weiss came shortly after a personal setback. Just ten minutes before the announcement of Weiss’s promotion, Gonzalez learned he would not be returning to the Braves. Initially, he felt “down in the dumps,” grappling with the emotions of his departure. Yet, upon hearing the news of Weiss stepping into the managerial role, his spirits lifted.
“It was an immediate change in my mood,” Gonzalez reflected, noting the excitement that Weiss’s appointment brought him. For Gonzalez, the decision to promote Weiss represented a “no-brainer,” reflecting the values Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos emphasized during his exit press conference.
Integrity and Passion for the Game
Gonzalez highlighted that one of the core traits Anthopoulos sought in a managerial candidate was integrity. He passionately endorsed Weiss, stating, “Nobody has more integrity for the game and love for the game and the way he takes care of people than Walt Weiss.” This endorsement underscores the deep respect Gonzalez holds for his former colleague, recognizing Weiss’s commitment not just to the game, but to the people within it.
Although Gonzalez had not yet spoken directly with Weiss following the promotion, he could not contain his excitement for him. The two had previously collaborated when Gonzalez was brought in midseason as a replacement for the third base coach position, establishing a rapport that adds depth to Gonzalez’s commendation.
Coaching Staff Takes Shape
As Weiss settles into his new role, the Braves have been busy assembling his coaching staff. In an announcement earlier this week, the team revealed that Jeremy Hefner will serve as the pitching coach, while Antoan Richardson will take on the first base coaching duties. With some positions still yet to be filled, the Braves organization anticipates finalizing the balance of Weiss’s coaching staff in the coming weeks.
Gonzalez’s Legacy and Weiss’s Future
Fredi Gonzalez managed the Braves from 2011 to 2016, following a coaching stint under Bobby Cox from 2003 to 2006. His tenure ended partway through the 2016 season, when Brian Snitker took over, holding the managerial reins until last month. As Weiss embarks on this new chapter, the Braves community watches with interest, buoyed by the belief that he embodies the integrity and passion crucial for leading the team forward.
