Tommy Edman Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Aiming for Spring Training Comeback
Dodgers utility player Tommy Edman, a pivotal member of the team’s World Series roster, is set to undergo surgery on his right ankle next week. This news comes from reliable reports, indicating that Edman is expected to resume baseball activities in time for spring training.
Injury Background
Edman’s ankle issues have been a concern since he joined the Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season. He initially landed on the injured list at the end of April due to inflammation in the ankle, and later faced another setback in August when he was sidelined for a month with a right ankle sprain. These recurring injuries have likely hindered his performance on the base paths. After demonstrating impressive speed with 27 or more stolen bases in each of the previous three seasons, Edman has managed only nine successful steals during his tenure with the Dodgers.
Performance Amidst Pain
Despite his injury struggles, Edman showcased resilience throughout the season. He finished the postseason with a .222 batting average, contributing three doubles, two home runs, and eight RBIs. General manager Brandon Gomes acknowledged the toll the injury took on Edman. “This was clearly bothering him for a while,” Gomes noted at the annual general managers’ meetings in Las Vegas. “He’s so tough and went out there and kept just posting for us and obviously played great for us. So I think it’ll be good to get it addressed and then that way he can have this behind him and hopefully it won’t be an issue next year.”
Future Outlook
Edman had hinted at the possibility of surgery during the World Series, recognizing that the procedure might be necessary in the offseason. Yet, he managed to play through the pain, tying his career highs in postseason home runs (two) and regular season home runs (13) over just 113 games. “We’ll probably evaluate that after the season’s over,” he stated, expressing optimism about managing his condition during the playoffs. “It feels like it’s in a really good spot now. But, yeah, that’s something we’ll talk about in the offseason.”
As Edman prepares for surgery, a successful recovery could enhance his versatility on the field, allowing him to expand his role beyond second base, where he was primarily stationed during the postseason. The Dodgers are hopeful that a healthy Edman will return in full form, ready to contribute to the team’s ambitions.
