Dodgers ponder Ohtani as postseason closer while Kershaw embraces bullpen role for potential final October push

Dodgers Consider Ohtani as Postseason Closer While Kershaw Embraces Bullpen Role

As the postseason approaches, the Los Angeles Dodgers maintain a slender lead over the San Diego Padres in the National League West. With October on the horizon, the team is contemplating strategic adjustments to its pitching lineup to enhance their chances for a deep playoff run. A compelling notion gaining traction is the possibility of utilizing superstar Shohei Ohtani in a closer role.

Ohtani’s Potential Shift to the Bullpen

During a recent interview on the Dan Patrick Show, Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior expressed enthusiasm about the idea of Ohtani stepping into a relief role when the stakes are highest. He stated that he could “absolutely” envision a scenario where Ohtani takes the mound to secure the final outs of crucial playoff games. However, this strategic maneuver comes with a significant caveat: deploying Ohtani as a reliever would mean sacrificing his offensive contributions, as he would vacate his designated hitter spot when it’s his turn to bat.

Bob Nightengale elaborated on the dilemma, noting that if Ohtani pitches in relief, he would not be available to hit, thus limiting the Dodgers’ offensive capabilities. The dual-threat nature of Ohtani as both a pitcher and hitter has been a cornerstone of his value to the team, making any decision to shuffle his role particularly impactful.

Kershaw’s Willingness to Adapt

In light of the complexities surrounding Ohtani’s potential shift, the Dodgers may consider moving veteran Clayton Kershaw to the bullpen for the postseason. According to MLB.com, the projected four-man rotation for the National League Division Series could feature Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Ohtani, which would necessitate Kershaw stepping into a relief role.

Kershaw, who is nearing the twilight of his illustrious career, has expressed openness to this idea. With retirement looming, he acknowledges the uncertainty of his future, stating, “But I don’t know what is going to happen in the future. I really have no idea when it comes to the years beyond this one.” His focus remains on enjoying the present and contributing to a strong team dynamic. “We still have a lot to accomplish. We still have October,” he added, underscoring his commitment to the collective goal rather than individual accolades.

Kershaw’s Experience as a Stabilizing Force

Kershaw’s willingness to adapt is a testament to his leadership and dedication to the Dodgers’ quest for another World Series title. Even in a bullpen capacity, the future Hall of Famer can offer invaluable stability and experience to a relief corps that has faced inconsistency throughout the season.

With a talented rotation and a flexible approach to their pitching strategy, the Dodgers are well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in the postseason. As they navigate these decisions, the focus remains clear: to harness the strengths of both Ohtani and Kershaw in whatever capacity they can best serve the team’s championship aspirations.
