Dodgers eye Roki Sasaki as potential postseason closer

The Los Angeles Dodgers are setting their sights on Roki Sasaki as a potential postseason closer, even as the young pitcher navigates a challenging first season in Major League Baseball. At just 23 years old, Sasaki has already shown flashes of brilliance, but his journey has not been without its hurdles.

Injury Delays and Rehab Progress

Before the Dodgers kicked off their weekend series against the San Francisco Giants, manager Dave Roberts addressed the media regarding Sasaki’s status. He revealed that the talented right-hander would make at least one more start with the Triple-A affiliate, the OKC Comets, after a minor calf issue sidelined him longer than expected. The injury delayed his return beyond the 30-day threshold, but Roberts remains optimistic.

“We’re hopeful that Roki can take the mound in a Dodgers uniform before the end of the season,” Roberts stated. He emphasized the possibility of Sasaki contributing from the bullpen if the situation calls for it, highlighting his versatility and potential impact on the playoff roster.

A Challenging Season

Sasaki’s debut season in the States has been anything but smooth. With a 4.72 ERA over 34.1 innings pitched, he has faced the typical struggles that accompany the transition to Major League Baseball. The young pitcher has demonstrated flashes of his renowned talent, but inconsistency has crept into his performances.

Despite these challenges, the Dodgers believe in Sasaki’s potential to bolster their bullpen as they gear up for postseason play. His ability to generate high-velocity pitches and miss bats could provide a valuable asset in high-leverage situations, should he regain his form.

As the regular season winds down, all eyes will be on Sasaki. With the Dodgers keen to solidify their pitching staff for the playoffs, the hope is that he can make a significant impact when it matters most. The organization’s faith in his capabilities suggests they are not ready to write off a player they believe can be a key contributor in October.
