Dodgers Eye Kyle Hurt as Potential Playoff Secret Weapon

The Los Angeles Dodgers are preparing for a potential shake-up in their bullpen as the playoffs approach, with manager Dave Roberts hinting at the inclusion of right-hander Kyle Hurt as a key contributor. Hurt, who is nearing full recovery from Tommy John surgery, could add depth to a bullpen that has struggled at times this season.

Hurt’s Return from Injury

Hurt’s major league experience is limited, having made just four appearances and yielding one earned run over 8.2 innings. However, his performance during a rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma City demonstrates his readiness. In six games, Hurt posted an impressive 2.16 ERA and recorded 10 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. As the postseason looms, the Dodgers are keen on leveraging Hurt’s fresh arm to bolster their relief options.

Brock Stewart’s Potential Impact

In addition to Hurt, the Dodgers are also eyeing the return of Brock Stewart, another reliever who recently landed on the 15-day injured list after making only four appearances. Stewart, who had a 4.91 ERA with the Dodgers, had a more favorable 2.38 ERA during his time with the Twins earlier this season. Roberts emphasized Stewart’s importance, stating, “I know for certain that Brock will be in major-league games.” His return could provide much-needed stability to a bullpen that has faced challenges throughout the month.

Bullpen Struggles and Opportunities for Growth

September has been a tumultuous month for the Dodgers’ relievers, with several blown saves and inconsistent performances raising concerns among fans. The team’s bullpen posted a 4.84 ERA over the first two weeks, ranking among the bottom ten in Major League Baseball. Additionally, they managed only four holds during this stretch, a statistic that highlights their struggles.

In light of these challenges, Roberts has been exploring personnel adjustments within the bullpen. He noted, “It’s just trying to see which guys step up with opportunities.” The manager mentioned Tanner Scott’s recent success, pointing out that the last two outings have been particularly encouraging. Roberts is committed to giving players chances to prove themselves as the team navigates the final stretch of the regular season.

Looking Ahead to October

As the Dodgers gear up for the playoffs, the potential additions of Kyle Hurt and Brock Stewart could serve as a game-changer for a bullpen in need of reinforcements. Their ability to adapt and perform under pressure will be crucial as the team seeks to make a deep postseason run. With the regular season winding down, decisions surrounding the final roster are on the horizon, and Roberts will be watching closely to see who rises to the occasion.
