The ongoing battle for supremacy in the National League West has taken center stage as the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers engage in yet another thrilling showdown. Recently, the Padres even claimed the division lead for a brief moment, showcasing their potential. However, the Dodgers have reclaimed the top spot with the postseason approaching fast. If they maintain their current trajectory, they’ll secure their 12th division title in the last 13 years.

Stars Question the Rivalry’s Depth

The Dodgers’ dominance in the division has prompted some reflection from their star players regarding the nature of this rivalry. Mookie Betts, a prominent infielder and former MVP, alongside catcher Will Smith, recently discussed this topic on Betts’ podcast. Both athletes expressed skepticism about labeling the competition against the Padres as a true rivalry just yet.

“We’ve had five years now of some really good baseball games, really good series, postseason matchups and stuff,” Smith remarked. “But Red Sox-Yankees is 100 years old. That’s the rivalry in baseball, just from a historical standpoint. I’m not taking away from our battles with them, but I just think time and longevity mean something a little bit more than where we’re at with them. But it’s fun, though.”

Contrasting Perspectives on Rivalry

Betts chimed in with a similar sentiment, drawing on his experience as a former Red Sox player. He highlighted the difference in the emotional stakes involved. “Here, it’s mostly just about baseball and who has the best team. It’s a beautiful thing. I definitely enjoy coming into Petco and hearing all their fans. Super loud, and it’s a great atmosphere to play baseball,” he said. However, he contrasted this with the Yankees-Red Sox dynamic, where the rivalry extends beyond the field, encompassing city pride and a deeper historical context. “With the Yankees and Red Sox, it’s about the cities. It’s like, whose city is better? Who can be the loudest? It runs much, much deeper and has so much more history.”

As the regular season winds down, both the Dodgers and Padres are in strong positions for a postseason run. The Dodgers currently hold a two-game lead in the NL West, while the Padres are three games above the cut line in the NL Wild Card race. With the stakes high and the intensity palpable, the question remains: can this rivalry evolve into something more profound, or will it remain a compelling competition for division supremacy? Only time will tell as both teams push toward the playoffs.
