Dodgers aim to exploit Phillies’ bullpen Achilles’ heel as NLDS showdown determines World Series fate

Dodgers Seek to Capitalize on Phillies’ Bullpen Vulnerabilities in NLDS Showdown

The Los Angeles Dodgers are heading to the East Coast after a swift clean sweep of the Cincinnati Reds in the NL Wild Card round. Their next challenge is a formidable one: a best-of-five series against the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League Division Series (NLDS). The stakes are high, as the winner is poised to emerge as a favorite for the World Series.

Exploiting the Phillies’ Weakness

While the series promises to be fiercely competitive, the Dodgers have identified a significant opportunity to exploit the Phillies’ bullpen, particularly in the middle innings. Analysts from The Athletic have highlighted that despite the strengths of Philadelphia’s starters and their ace closer, Jhoan Duran, the transition between their starting rotation and the backend of their bullpen presents a potential Achilles’ heel.

“Getting the ball to Duran might be an adventure,” the analysts noted, pointing to setup men David Robertson and Matt Strahm, who, while effective at times, lack the dominant velocity typically expected from elite relievers. This uncertainty could create openings for the Dodgers to seize control during crucial moments of the game.

Left-Handed Pitching Challenges

The Phillies are set to deploy three left-handed starters against the Dodgers: Cristopher Sanchez, Jesus Luzardo, and Ranger Suarez. While the Dodgers have had success against lefties, the real battle may lie in how they handle the middle relief corps. Strahm, Robertson, and Orion Kerkering are all key to bridging the gap to Duran, and their inconsistency could be a double-edged sword.

The Dodgers’ game plan is straightforward: they must target these middle relievers early and often. With the trio of lefties starting, the Dodgers will need to be strategic in their approach to maximize their offensive opportunities.

Key Performers in the Spotlight

Mookie Betts emerges as a pivotal player in this matchup. With fellow superstars Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani also batting from the left side, there’s a strong likelihood that Strahm will be called upon to face the top of the Dodgers lineup. While Ohtani and Freeman possess the skills to handle left-handed pitching, Betts’ performance against Strahm will be critical to the Dodgers’ success.

If the Dodgers can find a way to get to Strahm early in games, it could set the tone for the entire series. The Dodgers will need to focus on producing against the Phillies’ middle relievers—whether that be Strahm, Robertson, Kerkering, or Tanner Banks—to leverage their advantage.

The Path to Victory

The Dodgers are well aware that the Phillies boast one of the fiercest starter-closer combinations in baseball. Instead of attempting to navigate through tough matchups, the Dodgers must concentrate on capitalizing on the vulnerabilities of Philadelphia’s middle relief. If they can successfully exploit this weakness, they’ll position themselves favorably to advance in the postseason.

As the NLDS unfolds, the Dodgers’ ability to adapt and execute their strategy against the Phillies’ bullpen could very well determine their path to the World Series.
