Detroit Tigers shuffle roster as Sawyer Gipson-Long lands on IL and Jose Urquidy returns to active duty

Tigers Adjust Roster with Key Moves Ahead of Marlins Series

The Detroit Tigers made critical adjustments to their roster ahead of their series opener against the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park. The team announced that right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to neck stiffness, a setback that follows a challenging performance against the New York Yankees.

Gipson-Long’s Struggles and Injury

Gipson-Long’s injury comes on the heels of a disappointing outing on Thursday night, where he struggled significantly, allowing seven earned runs over just 2.1 innings. The Tigers faced a tough defeat in that game, losing 9-3 at Yankee Stadium, which underscored the urgency for the team to address their pitching staff.

Urquidy Returns to Action

In a positive turn, the Tigers activated pitcher Jose Urquidy off the 60-day injured list. His return adds depth to the rotation, as he rejoins the 28-man active roster. Urquidy’s experience will be crucial as the Tigers navigate the final stretch of the season.

Brieske’s Transition to the Injured List

To accommodate Urquidy’s return on the 40-man roster, the team recalled right-hander Beau Brieske from Triple-A Toledo. However, in a twist of unfortunate news, Brieske has been placed on the major league 60-day injured list due to a right forearm strain. This series of moves reflects the Tigers’ ongoing efforts to manage their pitching resources effectively as they head into this pivotal series against the Marlins.

With the Tigers currently holding a record of 84-63, the stakes are high, and every game counts as they aim for postseason contention.
