Detroit Tigers’ offseason chaos: four bullpen targets to ignite playoff dreams!

Date:

Detroit Tigers Eye Bullpen Reinforcements This Offseason

The Detroit Tigers are entering a pivotal offseason, fresh off a second consecutive heartbreak in the American League Division Series. For the second year in a row, the team was eliminated in Game 5, a painful reminder of their collapse in the AL Central division race. While this year’s exit felt particularly disheartening, it also illuminated the potential of a young, talented roster poised to contend for championships in the near future. However, before the Tigers can take that crucial next step, significant work remains, particularly in bolstering their bullpen.

Assessing the Bullpen Situation

The Tigers’ bullpen struggled down the stretch, a critical area that Scott Harris, the team’s president of baseball operations, must address this winter. High-leverage relievers capable of closing out games are essential to any playoff-bound team, and the Tigers will need to explore various options in free agency to shore up their late-game performance.

Four Bullpen Targets to Consider

As the Tigers look to enhance their bullpen, here are four potential targets that could fit the bill:

Robert Suarez

Suarez stands out as one of the premier closers in Major League Baseball. This past season, he led the National League with 40 saves while posting a commendable 2.97 ERA and a 0.904 WHIP over 70 appearances. With 75 strikeouts against just 16 walks across 69.2 innings, his performance solidified his status as a top-tier reliever. However, the Tigers face an uphill battle to land him, especially after he declined an $8 million option to enter free agency. Despite the financial implications, adding Suarez could transform the Tigers into serious contenders.

Kenley Jansen

Another veteran option is Kenley Jansen, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels last season. After a rocky start, the future Hall of Famer rebounded impressively, finishing with a 2.59 ERA, a 0.949 WHIP, and 29 saves in 62 appearances. At 38 years old, Jansen has proven he still possesses the skills necessary to perform at a high level. For the Tigers, securing a reliable veteran closer on a potentially short-term contract could be invaluable.

Hoby Milner

Should the Tigers prefer a more budget-friendly option, Hoby Milner could be an intriguing candidate. Coming off a mediocre season, Milner may not command a hefty salary, making him an attractive risk for the Tigers. The left-handed reliever struggled with his strikeout and walk rates, hinting at possible mechanical issues. Nevertheless, adding Milner alongside a more established arm could provide the team with the versatility it needs in the bullpen.

Kyle Finnegan

Lastly, a reunion with Kyle Finnegan, acquired by the Tigers at the trade deadline, seems plausible. Finnegan has expressed interest in returning, provided the terms are favorable. When healthy, he was exceptional for Detroit, posting a 1.50 ERA and a 0.722 WHIP in 16 regular-season appearances. If the Tigers believe he can replicate that performance over an entire season, he could become a cost-effective solution for their bullpen woes.

As the offseason unfolds, the Tigers have a critical opportunity to reshape their bullpen and solidify their path toward playoff aspirations. By targeting the right talent, the organization can build upon the promise of its young roster and aim for a brighter future.
