Detroit Tigers Navigate Offseason Turbulence as Tarik Skubal’s Free Agency Approaches

The offseason is always a hectic time for Major League Baseball teams, but for the Detroit Tigers, the stakes have never been higher. With free agency and arbitration on the horizon, the organization is grappling with the impending free agency of their ace, Tarik Skubal. The decisions made in the coming months will significantly influence their financial flexibility as they look to secure their star pitcher’s services beyond 2026.

The Arbitration Conundrum

The Tigers are one of only eight teams facing negotiations with more than ten players during this offseason. This presents a unique challenge, especially as they attempt to balance their payroll concerns for the upcoming years. Alongside Skubal, the Tigers have other pivotal players like Casey Mize, Spencer Torkelson, Riley Green, Kerry Carpenter, and Zach McKinstry also awaiting arbitration decisions.

While the team has a manageable number of players entering free agency—eight in total—the reality remains that not all of them will remain with the Tigers as they gear up for 2026. The question looms: how many of these players will contribute to a competitive roster?

Key Free Agency Figures to Watch

As the Tigers sift through their roster and evaluate potential signings, a few names emerge as top priorities:

No. 1: Kyle Finnegan

Finnegan stands out as the most impactful acquisition from the trade deadline, instantly enhancing the team’s bullpen. His performance in the latter half of the season was nothing short of stellar, boasting a 1.50 ERA across 16 appearances, complemented by 23 strikeouts and a minuscule 0.72 WHIP. The Tigers’ management made a wise investment in him, and retaining Finnegan should be a top priority.

No. 2: Gleyber Torres

Torres, who secured his third All-Star selection this year, brings both experience and talent to the table. Although his postseason performance fell short of expectations—mirroring a collective struggle for the team—his regular-season contributions were significant. With 136 hits and 74 RBIs—ranking second and third on the team respectively—his offensive production cannot be overlooked.

Honorable Mention: Alex Cobb

While Cobb is an intriguing option to consider, he falls behind Finnegan and Torres in terms of urgency. After not throwing a pitch this past season, his status remains uncertain. The Tigers might explore his potential, but immediate priorities lie with more impactful players.

As the Tigers face an offseason filled with critical decisions, the looming free agency of Tarik Skubal adds an extra layer of complexity. With a mix of arbitration negotiations and free agency considerations, the management must tread carefully to ensure they secure the future of their franchise ace while also strengthening the roster for years to come. The path ahead promises to be challenging, but with careful planning, the Tigers can navigate this tumultuous landscape.
