David Ortiz stuns Red Sox Nation by picking Pete Alonso over Kyle Schwarber for power boost

Date:

Ortiz Weighs In on Red Sox’s Power Needs

The Boston Red Sox find themselves yearning for a figure reminiscent of David Ortiz, who left a significant void in the heart of their batting order nearly a decade ago. While Rafael Devers has stepped up as a formidable slugger in his own right, his recent move to San Francisco has left the team grappling with a lack of home-run power. From June 16 onward, the Red Sox ranked just 23rd in the majors in home runs, underscoring the urgent need to bolster their lineup.

The Choice Between Two Power Hitters

Among the names surfacing as potential solutions to this power deficit are Kyle Schwarber and Pete Alonso. Both players could inject the necessary firepower, each capable of belting over 35 home runs in a season. However, the pressing question is: which of these two would be the superior fit for the Red Sox?

David Ortiz, the franchise icon, has weighed in on this pivotal decision. In a recent appearance on the “ITM Podcast,” Ortiz expressed a preference for Alonso, citing the need for lineup balance. He acknowledged the significance of having a right-handed bat to complement the left-handed hitters already present in the lineup, particularly with the rise of left-handed power pitchers in the league.

Ortiz’s Perspective on Lineup Balance

“You’re talking about two monsters,” Ortiz remarked, recognizing the impressive capabilities of both players. “But if I had to pick one, because I have Roman Anthony as a left-handed batter, I would go with a right-handed bat.” He emphasized that while matchups can be strategically exploited, the presence of a powerful right-handed hitter would significantly enhance the team’s chances, especially at Fenway Park, where the dimensions favor such hitters.

Ortiz also noted that if the Red Sox were to secure Alex Bregman, his opinion on the matter might shift. “If we sign Bregman, I don’t care who we go for,” he stated. The flexibility in the lineup would allow for a combination of talented hitters, whether it be Schwarber, Bregman, or Anthony.

Schwarber vs. Alonso: A Closer Look

Schwarber, who previously donned a Red Sox jersey, had a standout season, leading the National League with a career-high 56 home runs. His return to Boston could bring familiarity and a proven track record. Alonso, on the other hand, closely trailed Schwarber in OPS+ this past season, showcasing his own potential for power with a strong 150 OPS+ rating.

With Bregman not currently in the fold, the Red Sox face an undeniable need for right-handed impact in their lineup. While both Schwarber and Alonso represent significant upgrades, Ortiz’s endorsement of Alonso as a better fit highlights the strategic considerations at play for the Red Sox.

Ortiz’s Ongoing Legacy

Beyond his insights into the team’s needs, Ortiz is also engaged in philanthropic efforts, including a silent auction featuring valuable memorabilia. The auction, which runs until November 15, is part of the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, illustrating the former slugger’s continued commitment to making a difference beyond the baseball diamond.

As the Red Sox look to reshape their lineup, Ortiz’s voice adds a layer of depth to the conversation, reminding fans of the importance of balance and strategic thinking in building a competitive team.
