Cubs’ pitching dreams crushed as Tarik Skubal and Ryan Helsley deals fall apart

Date:

Cubs’ Pitching Aspirations Dwindle as Trade Opportunities Fade

The Chicago Cubs have much to reflect on as they approach the 2026 season, but the focus now is squarely on bolstering their pitching staff. With the market for available arms dwindling rapidly, the urgency for the Cubs to make strategic moves is palpable. The looming prospect of repeating last season’s struggles hangs over the organization.

Tarik Skubal Signals Commitment to Detroit

In the realm of pitching, the name on every general manager’s wish list is Tarik Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner. His potential availability sparked widespread speculation after the World Series concluded, with many teams, including the Cubs, keenly interested in acquiring his talents.

However, Skubal recently hinted at his intentions via social media during a Thanksgiving halftime show, suggesting a commitment to remain with the Detroit Tigers. “Goosebumps… You guys available April 3rd?” he posted, referencing the Tigers’ home opener. This indication could mean he is poised to stay put, which might be a blessing in disguise for the Cubs. A trade for Skubal would likely deplete a significant portion of their farm system, risking the future for an immediate fix.

Sandy Alcantara Trade Hopes Dim

The Cubs had also been linked to Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins, a pitcher who could provide a strong one-two punch alongside Cade Horton in the rotation. With Alcantara’s contract extending through 2027, he could have been a key piece in a championship-caliber unit.

Yet, recent commentary from MLB insider Jon Heyman dampens those hopes. He noted that there’s little belief among executives that Alcantara, alongside fellow pitcher Edward Cabrera, would be traded. With options becoming increasingly scarce, Cubs fans may find themselves disheartened as the pool of available pitching talent continues to dry up.

Ryan Helsley Signs with Baltimore

In another setback for the Cubs, interest in closer Ryan Helsley has also fallen flat. Reports had indicated that Chicago was among the teams vying for the talented reliever. However, confirmation came through that Helsley has signed a two-year contract with the Baltimore Orioles, which includes an opt-out clause after the first season.

This development means the Orioles will secure Helsley as their primary ninth-inning option, thwarting the Cubs’ hopes of adding his formidable presence to their bullpen. With teams reportedly considering converting Helsley to a starting role, the Cubs’ pursuit of a reliable arm continues to face challenges.

As the offseason progresses, the Cubs must navigate a precarious pitching landscape. With key targets slipping away, the urgency to act is becoming more critical if they wish to avoid a repeat of last year’s pitching woes.
