Cubs face tough decision as Dodgers eye $40M star Kyle Tucker to boost their lineup in 2026

Date:

Cubs at a Crossroads with Kyle Tucker’s Free Agency Looming

As the fall approaches, Kyle Tucker stands out as the most coveted free agent in Major League Baseball. The Chicago Cubs outfielder, who made his way to Chicago via a trade from the Houston Astros, is expected to command a staggering annual salary of around $40 million when the free agency window opens.

Dodgers Eyeing Tucker for 2026 Lineup

Interest in Tucker’s services is already heating up, with multiple teams rumored to be in the mix. Notably, the Los Angeles Dodgers have emerged as front-runners, aiming to bolster their right field position with the dynamic outfielder. According to reports, the Dodgers are looking to fill the vacancy left by Mookie Betts, who has transitioned to a full-time shortstop role. This shift has highlighted a gap in their right field production, making Tucker a perfect candidate to step in.

Following initial speculation from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter echoed the sentiments, predicting Tucker’s presence in the Dodgers’ starting lineup for the 2026 season. Known for their financial prowess, the Dodgers have the resources to pursue marquee free agents, making this potential acquisition more than just a distant possibility.

Roster Adjustments Required for Dodgers

However, if Los Angeles is serious about securing Tucker, some roster adjustments will be necessary. The team would likely have to consider trading Andy Pages or shifting Tommy Edman back to an infield position. Pages is enjoying a career year, making it a tough sell to part ways with him at this juncture. This leaves Edman as the more feasible option to transition back to the infield.

Additionally, with Hyeseong Kim’s role expanding, he could be poised to take over as the everyday starter at second base. This would clear the way for Edman to slide into third base, allowing the Dodgers to create a space for Tucker in right field. The only remaining hurdle would be declining Max Muncy’s $10 million option, further solidifying the team’s path to acquire the star outfielder.

Cubs’ Dilemma: Re-signing Tucker or Investing Elsewhere

While re-signing Tucker might seem like the obvious choice for the Cubs, financial considerations could lead them down a different path. With the kind of salary Tucker is projected to command, the Cubs face a crucial decision. They have promising outfield prospects like Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcántara, who are ready to make their mark at the major league level.

Moreover, the Cubs are in need of a top-tier starting pitcher to complement their roster. By opting not to re-sign Tucker, they could allocate those funds toward acquiring a Cy Young-caliber arm next offseason, potentially enhancing their overall competitiveness.

As the offseason approaches, the Cubs find themselves at a pivotal crossroads. The allure of a superstar like Kyle Tucker is undeniable, but the potential for strategic investment elsewhere may prove to be a critical factor in shaping the team’s future.
