Cubs eye Ryan Helsley as potential bargain to bolster bullpen for future playoff runs at Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs are strategically positioning themselves for a potential Wild Card series as October approaches. With the Milwaukee Brewers clinching the NL Central title, the Cubs have solidified their hold on the top spot in the National League Wild Card race, which could pave the way for a home playoff series at the iconic Wrigley Field.

Future Decisions Loom

As the season winds down, the Cubs’ front office faces a pivotal offseason filled with crucial decisions. Among these is the need to reinforce their roster through free agency to build a competitive team for 2026 and beyond. A significant concern has been the closing situation, particularly during stretches when Daniel Palencia has been sidelined. This has highlighted a broader issue: the lack of reliable high-leverage arms in the bullpen.

Ryan Helsley: A Viable Option?

In light of these challenges, could the Cubs be considering a move for Ryan Helsley? The New York Mets acquired the closer just before the trade deadline, but his tenure in New York has been rocky at best. Helsley is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, and given his struggles with the Mets, it seems unlikely that the organization will look to retain him.

In his brief stint with the Mets, Helsley has logged just 17 innings, posting an unsightly 8.47 ERA. This starkly contrasts with his performance during his time with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he maintained a much more respectable 3.00 ERA over 36 innings.

Proven Track Record

Despite his recent woes, Helsley has a history of success that cannot be overlooked. He is a two-time All-Star and led all of Major League Baseball in saves with 49 last season, showcasing his ability to close out games effectively. Given this pedigree, the Cubs might see an opportunity to buy low on a proven reliever who has demonstrated dominance in critical situations.

Familiarity with the Division

Another advantage for the Cubs is Helsley’s familiarity with the NL Central, having spent the first seven years of his career with the Cardinals. This experience could help him transition seamlessly into a new role with Chicago.

Contract Considerations

While the specifics of a potential contract remain uncertain, it’s reasonable to assume that Helsley will be seeking a multi-year deal as he looks to establish himself after a tumultuous season. The Cubs, with their eye on future playoff runs, could find themselves in a position to capitalize on Helsley’s decreased market value, potentially solidifying their bullpen for years to come.
