Cubs Consider Colin Rea as Game One Starter Against Padres

With the postseason looming, the Chicago Cubs find themselves at a crucial juncture. Having secured a playoff berth for the first time since 2020 with a commendable 92-70 record, the team is gearing up for a wild card showdown at Wrigley Field against the formidable San Diego Padres, who finished the season at 90-72. As the anticipation builds, one pressing question remains: Who will take the mound for the Cubs in the opening game?

Injury Challenges and Pitching Decisions

The Cubs’ pitching staff has faced recent setbacks, most notably the loss of rookie sensation Cade Horton, who was expected to start in the playoff opener. Horton’s injury has left a void in the rotation, prompting the Cubs to explore their options. While Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga have experience, the team is now turning its gaze toward Colin Rea, who has quietly emerged as a valuable asset in their pitching lineup.

Colin Rea’s Season Performance

Rea, 35, reunited with his former manager Craig Counsell when he signed with the Cubs this season. Initially brought in to provide depth to the rotation, Rea has proven to be a shrewd offseason acquisition. He has logged significant innings this year, making 27 starts and posting a career-best ERA of 3.95. His performance has been particularly noteworthy in the second half of the season, where he has become one of the team’s most reliable arms.

Notably, Rea trails only Boyd on the team in total strikeouts, tallying 127 strikeouts throughout the season. His recent outing against the Cincinnati Reds showcased his potential. Despite the Cubs ultimately losing that game, Rea delivered a stellar performance, striking out 11 batters and allowing just one earned run over seven innings. This kind of dominance on the mound could be pivotal for the Cubs as they aim for postseason success.

The Decision Ahead

As the Cubs prepare to face the Padres, the decision to start Rea in Game One carries weight. His recent form suggests he can handle the pressure of a playoff atmosphere. With a solid track record this season, the Cubs could very well be leaning toward giving him the nod. As the team finalizes its pitching strategy, it remains clear that Rea’s contributions will be crucial in their quest for victory.
