Craig Counsell Takes a Bold Gamble with Andrew Kittredge as Opener in Wild Card Clash

One day after securing a 3-1 win in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell stirred the pot with a surprising twist in his pitching strategy for Game 2. In a decision that caught many off guard, Counsell announced that right-hander Andrew Kittredge, usually known as a late-inning reliever, would take the mound against the San Diego Padres, squaring off against right-hander Dylan Cease.

Kittredge, who delivered a solid scoreless inning of relief in the opener, has proven to be a reliable asset since joining the Cubs from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline. In 23 appearances, he has posted a commendable 3.32 ERA, complemented by five saves and 32 strikeouts. However, expectations for Kittredge’s outing are tempered, as he is not anticipated to pitch deep into the game.

Strategic Matchup Considerations

Counsell’s choice raises eyebrows, particularly given the array of other options available on the postseason roster. The Cubs have starters Shota Imanaga, Collin Rea, and Jameson Taillon at their disposal, alongside converted starters Aaron Civale, Michael Soroka, and Brad Keller.

This unconventional move appears to be driven by matchup considerations. Kittredge faced the Padres’ Nos. 9, 1, and 2 hitters in Game 1, and Counsell may be banking on a repeat of favorable results against the top of the order. Additionally, fielding a right-handed opener against San Diego’s predominantly right-handed lineup could play into the Cubs’ strategic calculus, with Imanaga poised to step in for long relief afterward.

Looking Ahead to Imanaga and Others

Imanaga, who finished the season with a 3.73 ERA, is expected to absorb the bulk of the innings following Kittredge’s short outing. The Cubs also retain options in Civale, Rea, and Soroka, providing a variety of tactical approaches as the game unfolds. Meanwhile, Taillon, who last took the mound on Saturday against St. Louis, could be held in reserve for a potential Game 3, should the Cubs need to extend the series.

As the Cubs prepare to take on the Padres in this pivotal matchup, all eyes will be on Kittredge and Counsell’s daring gamble, a decision that could shape the outcome of the Wild Card Series.
