Rockies Revamp Coors Field Grass in Bid for Fresh Start
The Colorado Rockies are taking a significant step towards rejuvenation at Coors Field by replacing the grass for the first time since 2019. Although the turf itself is not to blame for the team’s struggles, the overhaul symbolizes a broader commitment to improvement.
Grass Replacement Ahead of 2026 Season
As reported by various outlets including KDVR.com, the Rockies will install new Kentucky Bluegrass ahead of the 2026 season. This particular variety is known for its resilience, particularly in climates that experience extreme temperatures. The decision to replace the grass is part of routine maintenance, according to a Rockies spokesperson.
“The turf at Coors Field is being replaced due to normal wear and tear incurred from our season and the ancillary events that take place at Coors Field,” the spokesperson stated. This maintenance follows a standard schedule, as the last grass replacement occurred after the 2019 season.
A New Chapter After Three Disheartening Seasons
The Rockies’ decision to revamp their playing surface comes on the heels of a dismal three-season stretch, where the team has suffered over 100 losses each year. Notably, the 2022 season was particularly harsh, with the franchise recording a staggering 119 losses.
Coors Field, which also recently hosted a concert by Paul McCartney as part of his world tour, is among the 25 Major League Baseball stadiums that utilize natural grass. This change in grass not only aims to enhance the field’s aesthetic but also reflects the Rockies’ desire to usher in a new era for the team as they look to transcend their recent past.
As the Rockies prepare for this overhaul, fans are left hoping that this change will mark the beginning of a turnaround for a franchise desperately seeking a fresh start.
