Cody Bellinger reunion with Dodgers? Insider predicts $180M megadeal to return home

Date:

Cody Bellinger’s Potential Return to the Dodgers

Former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger has become a free agent after a standout season with the New York Yankees. As the offseason unfolds, speculation about his future has intensified, with MLB insiders suggesting a possible reunion with his former team.

Bellinger, who was drafted by the Dodgers in 2013, rose through their ranks and made a significant impact in the major leagues. His early career was marked by flashes of superstar potential, showcasing a powerful bat and impressive fielding skills. However, despite his success—including an MVP award in 2019 and a cumulative 17.2 bWAR in his first three seasons—Bellinger faced challenges as opposing pitchers adjusted to his mechanics. His upright batting stance often led to a high strikeout rate, making it difficult for him to consistently connect with offspeed pitches.

A Journey Through Challenges and Triumphs

After a challenging period with the Dodgers, Bellinger signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, seeking to revive his standing in the league. His efforts paid off; in 2023, he earned a Silver Slugger award and finished 10th in MVP voting, which ultimately led to a three-year extension with the Cubs. However, following the 2024 season, he was traded to the New York Yankees, where he once again thrived, prompting him to opt out of the final year of his contract and enter free agency.

Rumors of a Reunion with the Dodgers

Now back on the open market, Bellinger’s name has surfaced in discussions about his future, particularly concerning a possible return to Los Angeles. MLB insider Jon Heyman has pointed out that the Dodgers have a pressing need for outfield help, suggesting that Bellinger could fit seamlessly back into the fold.

“He’s basically erased those two subpar offensive years, especially after showing in The Bronx he is again a terrific two-way player,” Heyman noted. While the Yankees are keen to retain him, other teams, including the Mets and Phillies, are also in the mix. Bellinger has expressed a desire to play for a contender, which raises questions about whether that could include the Mets, who have openings in both center field and first base.

Potential Contract Projections

Heyman predicts that Bellinger could secure a six-year contract worth around $180 million in free agency. This figure translates to $30 million per season, a considerable sum but still shy of the expected earnings of other top players, such as Kyle Tucker, who may command a 10-year deal worth approximately $400 million.

In the 2024 season, Bellinger posted an impressive .272/.334/.480 batting line, hitting 29 home runs and driving in 98 RBIs. If he can maintain or even improve upon this level of production while continuing to demonstrate his defensive prowess, Dodgers fans would undoubtedly welcome him back with open arms. His return could play a crucial role in enhancing Los Angeles’ chances for future World Series titles.
