Cleveland Guardians Weigh Trade Options for Star Outfielder Steven Kwan

The Cleveland Guardians are at a crossroads this offseason, facing pivotal decisions that could reshape their roster. One of the most talked-about possibilities revolves around the future of star left fielder Steven Kwan, who has emerged as a potential trade candidate in the ongoing discussions at the General Manager Meetings in Las Vegas.

Trade Rumblings in Las Vegas

Jim Bowden, a notable Major League Baseball insider, shed light on the Guardians’ openness to moving Kwan in search of a more powerful lineup and a stronger option in centerfield. “The Guardians are open to moving outfielder Steven Kwan for more power and a better option for centerfield,” Bowden reported on Friday, igniting speculation among fans and analysts alike.

Kwan has just concluded his fourth season in MLB, showcasing his talents with a commendable performance that included 170 hits, 11 home runs, and 56 RBIs, all while maintaining a batting average of .272 over 156 games. The 28-year-old outfielder is under club control for just two more seasons before hitting free agency, a timeline that adds urgency to the Guardians’ decision-making process.

Historical Context of Guardians’ Trades

Cleveland has a history of trading impactful players when contract negotiations stall. The organization typically prefers to finalize extensions with young talent before they hit arbitration, as seen in past deals. Last season, for instance, they dealt first baseman Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks as he approached the final year of his contract. Similarly, in 2021, they traded star shortstop Francisco Lindor to the New York Mets before his contract expired.

Despite previous trade discussions surrounding Kwan ahead of the July deadline, no deal materialized. Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Chris Antonetti, the Guardians’ president of baseball operations, expressed relief that Kwan remained with the team. “What I can confirm for Steven is that not only do we have a profound appreciation for what he’s able to contribute on the baseball field and in the clubhouse,” Antonetti stated in July, “but so does the rest of Major League Baseball. We are really excited that he will continue to be with us moving forward.”

The Dilemma of Arbitration and Future Control

As Kwan enters arbitration, the Guardians face a dilemma. Given his proximity to free agency, the likelihood of securing a long-term contract is slim, especially with only two years left before he can explore the open market. This reality may push Cleveland to explore a trade, particularly if they believe Kwan will not be part of their plans beyond 2027.

The Guardians’ need for more power in their lineup is pressing. If they can leverage Kwan’s value to acquire a couple of promising prospects and a powerful bat, it may be a move worth considering. The prospect of enhancing their offensive capabilities while also rebuilding for the future could lead to a critical evolution in their roster strategy.

As the offseason progresses, the Guardians’ decisions regarding Kwan will undoubtedly be among the most closely watched storylines, with implications that could resonate throughout the league.
