Murphy’s addition is particularly significant as he becomes one of only five left-handed pitchers on the White Sox’s current 40-man roster, joining the ranks of Tyler Gilbert, Brandon Eisert, Bryan Hudson, and Ky Bush. Murphy’s path through the minors reflects his potential. His transition to the majors came in 2023, where he shifted to a relief role in the Red Sox bullpen. In his first 47.2 innings of major league action, he recorded a 4.91 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP, alongside 49 strikeouts.
White Sox general manager Chris Getz has high hopes for Murphy’s role within the team. “He has started in the past, which adds to his versatility and value,” Getz noted. “Not that we are sold on what role he’s going to play quite yet, but he has a track record of being able to face opponents from the right-handed side and having weapons there in neutralizing those appearances. A guy with some experience to add to our bullpen. And look forward to having him as part of the team next year as well.”

Although Murphy missed the entirety of the 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, his recovery and subsequent return could prove pivotal for the White Sox.
