Chicago Cubs’ trade ambitions explode: Sandy Alcantara eyed as ace for championship rotation boost

Cubs Set Their Sights on Sandy Alcantara for Rotation Reinforcement

As the Chicago Cubs gear up for the 2026 season, they are faced with a critical roster overhaul. Among their primary objectives is the urgent need to bolster their bullpen after losing several key relievers to free agency. While the front office, led by Jed Hoyer, is also considering how to offset the offensive void left by Kyle Tucker’s departure, it’s clear that enhancing the starting rotation is of utmost importance.

Aiming for Pitching Depth

The Cubs’ strategy seems focused on securing another quality arm to complement their existing roster. While free agency presents a viable avenue—names like Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, Dylan Cease, and Michael King have popped up in discussions—Hoyer may also explore the trade market. This approach could allow the Cubs to strengthen their rotation while maintaining flexibility in their budget for bullpen additions and offensive upgrades.

Trade Targets on the Horizon

Several pitchers are anticipated to be available as trade candidates, and the Cubs have reportedly expressed interest in Minnesota Twins’ Joe Ryan, alongside Miami Marlins’ promising young arm Edward Cabrera. Yet, Cabrera is not the only Marlins pitcher drawing attention from Chicago’s brass.

Sandy Alcantara: The Ace in Sight

During a recent segment on the Marquee Sports Network, MLB insider Bruce Levine highlighted Sandy Alcantara as a prime target for the Cubs. “I’m looking for a big trade for a guy that’s making $17 million in 2026, possibly $21 million in 2027. That’s Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins,” Levine stated. He underscored the value of acquiring Alcantara, noting, “He was back to being the dominant pitcher that he was at the end of the year. And for two more years of control. Putting him and [Cade] Horton as your one and two, and having the three veterans backing that up, to me, that’s a championship-caliber rotation.”

Alcantara’s Market Value and Potential Impact

Sandy Alcantara’s name has circulated in trade talks since last offseason, especially after his rocky start to the previous year. However, his performance rebounded, showcasing flashes of the ace potential that earned him accolades in earlier seasons. A deal for Alcantara could represent a significant step for Chicago, providing them with a frontline starter capable of anchoring their rotation.

As the Cubs embark on this critical offseason, the pursuit of Alcantara reflects their ambition to not only reinforce their pitching staff but also to position themselves as serious contenders for the championship. With a combination of strategic trades and smart free-agent signings, Chicago aims to reshape their roster into a formidable force in the league.
