Chicago Cubs shock fans: McGuire and Morgan likely to face non-tender axe!

Cubs’ Offseason Decisions Loom: McGuire and Morgan Facing Non-Tender Possibility

As the offseason unfolds, the Chicago Cubs find themselves in the midst of significant roster decisions. With the non-tender deadline approaching, the organization must evaluate its arbitration-eligible players for the upcoming 2026 season. This pivotal moment will determine whether certain players will receive contract offers or be released into free agency.

The non-tender deadline is particularly critical because if a player is not offered a contract by the deadline, they automatically become a free agent without going through waivers. This year, MLB insider Anthony Franco has identified catcher Reese McGuire and relief pitcher Eli Morgan as strong candidates for non-tendering. According to predictions from MLB Trade Rumors contributor Matt Swartz, the duo could command a combined salary of approximately $3 million in arbitration for the 2026 season.

Catcher Reese McGuire’s Limited Impact

Reese McGuire’s tenure with the Cubs has been significantly shaped by circumstances beyond his control. The catcher had the opportunity to ascend from Triple-A Iowa this past season primarily due to injuries sustained by backup catcher Miguel Amaya. Amaya dealt with an oblique strain that sidelined him for a substantial part of the year, and upon his return, he suffered a severe ankle injury. As a result, McGuire’s appearances were limited, making it difficult for him to establish a consistent presence in the lineup.

Eli Morgan’s Role in the Bullpen

Eli Morgan, a relief pitcher for the Cubs, faces similar uncertainty as the organization assesses its pitching depth. Morgan’s performance has not been enough to secure his spot, especially as the Cubs look to optimize their bullpen for the coming season. With the potential financial implications of his projected arbitration salary weighing on management’s decision, the Cubs must carefully consider whether to retain him or move in another direction.

As the deadline draws near, Cubs fans are left in suspense. The decisions regarding McGuire and Morgan may reflect a broader strategy as the team seeks to build a competitive roster capable of contending in the upcoming season. The clock is ticking, and the front office’s choices will set the tone for the Cubs’ future.
