Cubs Eye MacKenzie Gore as Imanaga Replacement
The Chicago Cubs find themselves at a crossroads following their recent separation from starting pitcher Shota Imanaga. As the team seeks to shore up its rotation, a potential trade for Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore could be the solution they need.
Imanaga’s Departure Leaves a Void
The Cubs and Imanaga have parted ways after the team declined his option, which would have extended his contract for an additional three years at nearly $60 million. Imanaga, for his part, declined a $15 million option offered in return. While this split doesn’t entirely preclude a future reunion, it does open the door for Imanaga to explore a market that is lacking in high-caliber starting pitchers.
With Imanaga’s departure, the Cubs’ current rotation consists of Matthew Boyd, Jameson Taillon, Cade Horton, Colin Rea, and Javier Assad. Meanwhile, Justin Steele is on the mend from Tommy John surgery, with a possible return not expected until 2026. Recognizing the need for further pitching depth, the Cubs are exploring both free agency and potential trades.
The Case for MacKenzie Gore
Among the trade options, MacKenzie Gore stands out as a compelling target. The young left-hander was a popular name during last season’s trade deadline but remained with the Nationals as they navigated a transition period. With the recent changes in Washington’s front office, including the departure of general manager Mike Rizzo and the appointment of interim GM Mike DeBartolo, the future of Gore has become uncertain.
Gore was recently identified as one of the Top 25 trade candidates for the offseason, a testament to his potential. Despite finishing with a disappointing 5-15 record and a 4.17 ERA, he earned a spot as a National League All-Star and ranked among the league’s top strikeout pitchers. He recorded 185 strikeouts over 159 innings, marking his second consecutive season with at least 180 strikeouts. His career averages reflect a striking ability of 10 strikeouts per nine innings, despite a record of 27-37 and a 4.15 ERA.
Potential Impact on the Cubs
Joining the Cubs could significantly enhance Gore’s performance, especially with a team capable of providing him the run support that has been scarce since his debut in 2022. Given his two years of team control remaining, Gore could command a substantial return in prospects for the Nationals. However, he is projected to earn around $4.7 million in arbitration, presenting a more affordable option compared to the contract Imanaga would have commanded.
If the Cubs are willing to meet the Nationals’ asking price, adding Gore to their rotation could position them favorably for contention in the coming seasons. With a potential return from Steele and the addition of Gore, Chicago could find itself with a formidable pitching staff by 2026.
