Brian Snitker’s Atlanta swansong looms as Braves’ beloved manager hints at unfinished business and possible retirement

Brian Snitker’s Atlanta Farewell Approaches Amid Whispers of Retirement and Unfinished Business

The Atlanta Braves are experiencing one of their most challenging seasons in recent memory. With a downward trajectory that began in June, the team’s struggles have persisted well into the final weeks of the campaign. As the dust settles, the possibility of change looms large, particularly regarding the future of manager Brian Snitker, who may soon be contemplating retirement.

A Season of Disappointment

The Braves entered the 2023 season with optimistic expectations, boasting the second-best preseason odds to win the World Series. Yet, that potential has quickly faded, with the team now facing the grim reality of potentially securing one of the top spots in the upcoming draft lottery. Kerry Miller from Bleacher Report noted that, under normal circumstances, Snitker would be granted a “mulligan” year given his track record of success. However, at 69, he stands as the oldest manager in the National League, and this season marks the end of his current contract.

Hints of Unfinished Business

While Snitker has largely remained tight-lipped about his future, he has occasionally hinted at unfinished business. Earlier in September, he expressed, “I still feel like there’s some unfinished business.” This statement suggests a lingering desire to leave a more substantial mark before stepping away from the game.

His comments in recent interviews have been notably ambiguous, neither confirming nor denying the possibility of a return. When discussing pitcher Hurston Waldrep, he shared his satisfaction with Waldrep’s development, indicating that the experiences gained this season would inform the next. He also spoke highly of Tyler Kinley, remarking, “I didn’t realize what we were getting anything like that, I tell you that. It’s a nice piece to have going into ’26, that’s for sure.” Such remarks reflect a forward-thinking mindset, despite the uncertainty surrounding his own future.

A Fitting Farewell

If Snitker is considering a return for another season, it would be a fitting tribute to a manager of his stature. His legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of the Braves organization, where he is highly esteemed. The notion of him exiting quietly seems implausible; the organization would surely ensure he receives the recognition he deserves, especially from General Manager Alex Anthopoulos.

Looking Ahead

As the Braves navigate this tumultuous season, the future remains unclear. With Snitker at the helm, the team has faced adversity, but his leadership and experience could provide the foundation for a resurgence. Whether he chooses to remain or to retire, one thing is certain: Brian Snitker’s impact on the Braves will be felt long after he decides to step away from the game.
