Brewers’ shocking decision: set to reject $32M reunion with All-Star Woodruff!

Date:

Brewers’ Surprising Decision on Woodruff’s Future

The Milwaukee Brewers are poised to make a surprising move regarding one of their star pitchers, Brandon Woodruff. As the offseason approaches, speculation mounts that the team may turn down the opportunity to reunite with their two-time All-Star, even with a significant financial implication hanging in the balance.

Stadium Upgrades Reflect Ambitious Future

Before diving into player decisions, it’s worth noting that the Brewers have recently unveiled impressive upgrades to their home turf. Two new scoreboards have been installed at American Family Field as part of a partnership with ANC, a digital signage company. The centerpiece is a massive 8mm LED display that spans 12,077 square feet, more than double the size of its predecessor. This enhancement places the Brewers among the MLB teams boasting the largest scoreboards in the league, providing fans with an elevated viewing experience.

Woodruff’s Contract Situation

Turning back to the roster, the future of starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff hangs in the balance. The longest-tenured player on the team recently declined his half of a $20 million mutual option, positioning himself on the brink of free agency. However, the Brewers still have a potential lifeline to retain him through a $22.025 million qualifying offer. If Woodruff accepts this offer, he could stay with the team for another year. Conversely, if he declines, the Brewers would benefit by receiving an additional draft pick at the end of the first round.

Financial Considerations Loom Large

The crux of the Brewers’ decision lies in financial considerations. MLB.com’s Mike Petriello anticipates that the Brewers may opt against extending the qualifying offer due to the existing $10 million buyout they owe Woodruff. This situation complicates things further, as extending the qualifying offer would mean the Brewers would essentially be committing $32 million—a substantial expenditure considering Woodruff’s recent injury struggles.

“Woodruff was one of the finest starters in baseball for a half-decade, but shoulder problems and ensuing surgery cost him much of the last three seasons,” Petriello noted. The potential for injury has cast a shadow over Woodruff’s performance, prompting the Brewers to weigh their options carefully.

The Road Ahead for the Brewers

As the winter months approach, all eyes will be on the Brewers’ front office as they navigate this pivotal decision. Will they take a chance on Woodruff’s health and potential return to form? Or will they choose a more cautious route, opting to preserve resources while looking to build a competitive rotation for the upcoming season?

The stakes are high, and the outcome could significantly shape the Brewers’ trajectory in the seasons to come.
