Brewers Bullpen Receives Crucial Boost as Trevor Megill Eyes Postseason Comeback

The Milwaukee Brewers are on the cusp of welcoming back a significant asset just as the postseason looms on the horizon. Closer Trevor Megill, who has been sidelined for over a month due to a right flexor strain, is eager to make his return in time for the playoffs. The opportunity for a trial run could come as early as this Sunday during the regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Reds.

Megill’s Impact Before Injury

Megill last took the mound on August 24, and his absence has left a noticeable void in the Brewers’ bullpen during a critical stretch of the season. Prior to his injury, he was a formidable force, amassing 30 saves and maintaining a solid 2.54 ERA. However, his final outings before hitting the injured list were less than stellar, as he experienced three blown saves in just four appearances.

Progress Report and Potential Return

On Friday, Megill participated in a simulated game, facing hitters and emerging with a sense of optimism regarding his recovery. The Brewers’ coaching staff is now keen to see him in live-action scenarios, even if it involves pitching to just a couple of batters, to aid in their final roster decisions ahead of the Division Series. Manager Pat Murphy noted that while Megill doesn’t need to pitch Sunday to secure his spot on the roster, competing against real hitters would offer essential insights. “It’ll help him, and it’ll help us,” Murphy remarked, emphasizing the mutual benefits of this experience.

Team Efforts Towards Recovery

Megill is not alone in his journey back to form; veteran left-hander Jose Quintana also participated in Friday’s simulated game as he recovers from a calf strain. Quintana is expected to be ready to contribute come October, further enhancing the Brewers’ pitching depth.

Postseason Aspirations and the Bullpen’s Potential

For the Brewers, who have already clinched the NL Central title, having Megill return to full strength would be a monumental advantage. If the towering 6-foot-8 righty can recapture his early-season prowess, the Brewers’ bullpen would transform into one of the most formidable units in the playoff landscape. As teams gear up for the postseason, the return of Megill could be a game-changer for Milwaukee’s championship aspirations.
