Braves’ hopeful comeback story: Grant Holmes eyes return from UCL injury with rehab over surgery for spring training boost

Holmes Takes Steps Toward Recovery

As the Atlanta Braves’ season draws to a close, there is a silver lining on the horizon for right-hander Grant Holmes. Less than a month after being sidelined due to a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), Holmes is back to throwing, signaling the beginning of his recovery journey. Braves manager Brian Snitker provided an optimistic update, revealing that Holmes has been playing catch and throwing against the wall.

Holmes appears to be feeling positive about his early recovery efforts. “Obviously, he hasn’t gone on the mound, didn’t torque anything yet, but getting there. We’ll see,” Snitker said, hinting at the cautious yet hopeful path ahead for the pitcher.

From Inflammation to UCL Tear

Initially, Holmes was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation, but further evaluations unveiled the more serious issue of a partially torn UCL. This revelation could have led to more drastic measures, such as Tommy John surgery, which fellow teammates like AJ Smith-Shawver have undergone. Instead, Holmes has chosen a route of rehabilitation, hoping to heal sufficiently to return to the mound.

The decision to pursue rehab over surgery reflects a growing trend among players who aim to avoid long recovery times. Holmes’s choice mirrors that of Spencer Strider, who opted for an internal brace. The Braves remain optimistic that Holmes can report to Spring Training and engage in the usual preparations for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead to Spring Training

The prospect of Holmes returning next season adds an exciting dimension to the Braves’ pitching rotation. Snitker noted, “Yeah, it would be interesting, and that’d be great for him and for us to have him back next year. It’d be awesome.” This potential comeback would mark a significant chapter in Holmes’s journey, highlighting his perseverance.

Once a first-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers, Holmes has experienced a long road to the majors, spending nearly a decade in the minor leagues. His persistence finally paid off last season when he transitioned from bullpen duties to making an emergency start, ultimately earning a spot in the rotation.

A Promising Future

As the Braves look toward the offseason, the hope for Holmes’s recovery shines bright. The possibility of his return not only serves as a testament to his resilience but also reflects the depth of the Braves’ pitching lineup moving forward. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly watching as Holmes continues to progress through his rehabilitation, hoping to see him back on the mound, contributing to the team’s success in the near future.
