Braves eye $64M deal to secure Ha-Seong Kim’s golden glove as they seek offensive boost at shortstop

Braves prioritize shortstop position as offseason approaches

As the offseason looms, the Atlanta Braves are confronted with a pivotal decision: finding a successor to manager Brian Snitker. However, the team’s most pressing concern lies beyond the dugout—addressing the shortstop position. Although the Braves showcased solid defensive skills at shortstop this past season, their offensive output ranked among the lowest in Major League Baseball.

Shortstop struggles since Swanson’s departure

The gaping hole left by Dansby Swanson’s departure in free agency three years ago has haunted the Braves. Nick Allen, who stepped in for Orlando Arcia this season, has been a defensive standout, and he is a strong contender for his first Gold Glove award. Yet, his offensive struggles are glaring. “Allen is a guy that should be used strictly as a defensive player at the end of games, not somebody who should be playing every day,” remarked a local analyst, highlighting the dilemma Atlanta faces.

General Manager’s offseason strategy

In his end-of-season review, Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos articulated the team’s immediate priorities. “Shortstop, bullpen, and rotation are among the areas they’ll discuss addressing this winter,” Anthopoulos stated. Retaining Ha-Seong Kim remains a central focus, though several factors will influence the decision.

Ha-Seong Kim: The top target

If the Braves aim to keep Kim, they will likely need to navigate the free agency waters. Since joining the team, Kim’s stock has risen significantly. Analysts suggest that a viable approach for the Braves would be to extend his current contract by three years at the same annual salary, resulting in a four-year, $64 million deal.

The importance of a strong shortstop

Kim has emerged as the best shortstop the Braves have fielded since Swanson’s exit, making him an essential target for the upcoming offseason. With no better defensive options available on the market, Anthopoulos faces a critical choice. If the Braves are serious about remaining competitive, securing Kim’s talents is a move they must prioritize.
