Braves battle to keep Ha-Seong Kim as shortstop hero faces $16M free agency crossroads after historic homer impact

Braves confront tough choices as Ha-Seong Kim emerges as a shortstop star before pivotal free agency

The Atlanta Braves find themselves in an unusual position this offseason, facing significant decisions well ahead of October. At the forefront of these dilemmas is shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who was claimed off waivers at the season’s end. In only his second game with the Braves, Kim achieved a milestone that had eluded the team for over a year: a home run from the shortstop position.

Kim’s three-run blast not only marked the first time a Braves shortstop had gone deep this year, but it also broke a long drought since Orlando Arcia hit one against the Marlins on September 20, 2024. This timely contribution showcased exactly what the Braves had been missing—a dynamic bat at shortstop.

Uncertainty looms over Kim’s future in Atlanta

Despite his immediate impact, Kim’s future in Atlanta remains clouded with uncertainty. The impending free agency raises critical questions about his next move. The thin market for shortstops might compel Kim to explore his options, which could pose a considerable challenge for the Braves.

“Because of this thin market, that would incentivize Kim to test the market,” noted an analyst, highlighting the urgency for Atlanta to solidify their hold on him. “If he opts out and signs elsewhere, they could be back to square one with this dilemma. The offense has had its struggles as is, and they have, at least for now, figured out one of the issues.”

Initially, it appeared that the Braves had a reasonable chance to retain Kim. However, growing apprehensions suggest he may take the plunge into free agency.

Strategic acquisition and its implications

In a strategic move, General Manager Alex Anthopoulos claimed Kim from the Rays to enhance the roster for the final month of the season. While this decision carried inherent risks—given Kim’s history with injuries and his player option of $16 million for 2026—the shortstop flourished in his 24 games with the Braves. His strong performance has raised the likelihood of him declining that option to seek greener pastures in free agency.

As one commentator pointed out, “The move came with risk as the often-injured Kim had a player option for $16 million in 2026. However, Kim played so well in his 24 games with Atlanta that him declining that option and testing free agency feels like the road we are headed down.”

The silver lining for the Braves

Despite the growing concerns, there is a glimmer of hope for the Braves. Kim may still be the most affordable option among this year’s free-agent shortstops, potentially allowing Atlanta the opportunity to make a strong push to keep him in the fold. However, the prospect of losing a player who has filled an essential role is weighing heavily on the minds of Braves management.

As the offseason looms, the Braves are also contending with other pressing issues, including potential changes to key bullpen arms and the future of former MVP finalists. With each passing day, the stakes grow higher for the organization as they navigate this pivotal period. The Braves are eager to solidify their lineup and avoid the pitfalls of past seasons, making their decisions regarding Kim all the more critical in the weeks ahead.
