Blue Jays Roll the Dice with Santander’s Surprise Return

The Toronto Blue Jays experienced a whirlwind of emotions on Tuesday, culminating in the unexpected activation of slugger Anthony Santander. As the team navigates the final stretch of the season, Santander’s comeback could be a game-changer for a lineup that has faced significant challenges in recent weeks.

Last-Minute Decision on Activation

Before the game, uncertainty loomed over Santander’s status. MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reported that the Blue Jays had yet to finalize their decision regarding the outfielder’s return. With the conclusion of the Triple-A Buffalo season, Santander was no longer eligible for rehab games, and it seemed the team might opt to wait another day. However, a few hours later, the front office shifted gears, announcing Santander’s activation from the injured list.

To make space for the power hitter, the Blue Jays placed Ty France on the 10-day injured list due to left oblique inflammation and designated pitcher Alex Mahoah, a former AL Cy Young finalist, for assignment. This move demonstrates the urgency to bolster the lineup as the team’s playoff aspirations come into sharper focus.

Impact of Santander’s Return on the Lineup

Santander’s return is particularly timely, given that the Blue Jays have been without their star shortstop, Bo Bichette, since September 9. Santander has been on the 60-day injured list since July 4 due to a shoulder issue, and his activation comes as a much-needed boost. Manager John Schneider noted the team’s deliberation process, stating they aimed to make the best decision for everyone involved. With Santander’s assurance that he felt ready to contribute, it seems the Blue Jays are optimistic about his impact moving forward.

However, it’s worth noting that Santander’s start with the Blue Jays has not been ideal. In his first 50 games, he posted the worst numbers of his career, slashing .173/.273/.304 with a .577 OPS, along with just six home runs and five doubles. His struggles are surprising, especially for a player who previously signed a five-year, $92 million contract after a career year where he hit 44 home runs and drove in 102 runs. The Blue Jays are banking on him rediscovering that form as they gear up for the playoffs.

Addressing Recent Offensive Struggles

While the Blue Jays have already secured a playoff berth, they are keen on clinching the division title. Recently, their offense has faltered, with even their $500 million player, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., experiencing a slump. Since Bichette’s injury, Guerrero has posted a lackluster .239/.300/.261 line, without a home run since September 5. This performance underscores the need for Santander to step up as a power threat in the middle of the order, especially in Bichette’s absence.

Santander’s presence in the lineup could alleviate some pressure from Guerrero and George Springer, who has been performing well. With another established slugger in the mix, pitchers may be forced to be more cautious, potentially leading to better opportunities for the entire lineup. The recent lack of power has been evident during Guerrero’s downturn, emphasizing the importance of Santander’s return if the Blue Jays aim to make a deep postseason run.

Looking Ahead to Lineup Adjustments

The return of Bichette will necessitate further lineup adjustments, depending on his knee health, but for now, the Blue Jays are reintroducing a proven hitter into their ranks. Santander will need to shake off the rust accumulated during his injury layoff and find his rhythm quickly, as the postseason beckons and the stakes rise.

As the Blue Jays navigate this critical juncture of the season, Santander’s return could be a pivotal moment in their quest for playoff glory.
