Blue Jays hesitate on Santander’s $110M potential as power slugger remains sidelined in prolonged wait for return

Date:

Blue Jays Delay Anthony Santander’s Return Amid Power Struggles

The Toronto Blue Jays are holding off on reintroducing Anthony Santander to their lineup. Despite significant expectations following a hefty five-year, $92.5 million contract—potentially escalating to $110 million—this season has not unfolded as the team had envisioned.

High Hopes Turn to Frustration

When the Blue Jays inked Santander to this lucrative deal during the offseason, they anticipated a formidable addition to their batting order. Following a standout previous season in which he launched a career-high 44 home runs and garnered 102 RBIs, the Blue Jays viewed him as a vital source of power in the middle of their lineup. However, the reality has been starkly different, as Santander has struggled significantly this year.

With a disappointing -1.0 bWAR, Santander’s performance has left much to be desired. His slash line stands at a meager .179/.273/.304, complemented by only six home runs and five doubles over 50 games and 209 plate appearances. Compounding these struggles, he has spent more than half the season on the injured list, dealing with a persistent shoulder issue. His last appearance in a Blue Jays uniform was on May 29, and since then, he has been diligently working through rehabilitation.

Awaiting the Decision

As the team gears up for a critical three-game series against the Boston Red Sox, the Blue Jays have decided against activating Santander just yet. Reports indicate that the decision was shared by Mitch Bannon, who noted that the team is still evaluating their next steps. While Santander himself feels prepared to return, the coaching staff has yet to finalize their approach.

There are two potential paths: he could either be activated for the upcoming game or sent to Buffalo for additional live pitching practice. However, with the Triple-A season concluded, Santander has no immediate opportunity to gain game experience.

The Blue Jays’ management is expected to make a decision within the next 24 hours, leaving fans and teammates alike in anticipation of what comes next for the slugger. For now, the wait continues, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding a player who was once seen as a cornerstone for the franchise’s offensive aspirations.
